Yesterday, Capcom released a live-action promotional video for Resident Evil Requiem starring Maika Monroe. The short film, titled Evil Has Always Had A Name, features a mother and daughter caught up in the Raccoon City incident, an in-universe event that underpins much of the series.
The events of Raccoon City are the setting for Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3. The latter game features a character named Nemesis, a mutant creature who stalks the game's protagonist, Jill Valentine, throughout her harrowing journey to escape the infected city.
star…
In the Requiem promotional video, we actually see Nemesis in the background for a moment. At about 1:33 in the video, the Raccoon Police Department (RPD) can be seen advancing toward a cloud of smoke as Monroe's character looks for a way to escape the carnage.
In the background, the silhouette of Nemesis can be seen walking through smoke just behind the police car. This character is easily recognizable thanks to its massive size and unique gait.
If you listen closely, you can faintly hear Nemesis' signature “Stars…” in the background right before the police car explodes. Fortunately, our hero isn't Jill Valentine or her companions, so we don't have to see Nemesis' live-action face up close. Unfortunately, the protagonist's daughter dies and the film ends with a zombified Monroe looking at her daughter's grave before being shot dead.
Resident Evil 3 director is confused as to how Raccoon City is still standing in Requiem and asks if time travel was involved.
The plan was to completely destroy Raccoon City so that there would be nothing left.
We also see aerial shots of Raccoon City during the end of Resident Evil 3 and the aftermath of the missile attack that hit the city. Importantly, we see that most of the city is still intact, something Capcom wanted to make clear given Raccoon City's appearance in Requiem.
Capcom recently confirmed that both the cityscape featured in the game's NVIDIA trailer and the run-down hotel where Alyssa Ashcroft finds her death are located in Raccoon City. People were surprised because past titles seemed to imply that the city was completely destroyed after Resident Evil 3.
Considering what Valentine did to Nemesis, it seems unlikely that Nemesis will return in Requiem. Listen, Capcom. If you're walking through a dark hallway and hear a “star…” muttering behind you, it's probably not a good feeling.
