BioWare's Anthem will become unplayable forever

Anthem is ending soon. When it was revealed, Electronic Arts touted it as the next big thing in gaming. It was BioWare's post-Mass Effect Glo, a sci-fi shooter with the paradigm-shifting goal of bringing players together in a world that was better realized and more powerfully written than anything the developer had offered.

Not only did it never materialize, but BioWare went through some pretty significant rough patches with regard to public perception both before and after release. In my opinion, and that of many others, Anthem's story has been hampered by its creators' live service goals, as we all could have predicted. But if there's one thing Anthem got right, it's the sensation of “Iron Man.”

We're dangerously close to our last chance to experience the best flight mechanics. If you've never been to Anthem or just want to go there for one last ride, consider this a public disclaimer. Go play.

everything ends

To be clear, we knew this was coming. Electronic Arts broke the news half a year ago. Since then I'm totally speculating here, but there were probably hundreds or even thousands of them! – New players who have tried Anthem once or twice. It's not that much of a paralysis, but Anthem was basically canceled years ago. It's not like EA includes this in the shareholders' meeting footnotes section.

That's usually part of a nuanced interview discussion, but I definitely agree with Mr. White about the risks.

Given the radio silence, Anthem's January 12 exit date probably won't result in any major send-off. Maybe not even a small one. There's probably an advertising opportunity somewhere here for a quick PR note about how proud you are of the team, the players, and viewers like you. What the heck if I knew.

But that's right. It's almost gone. It's sunset, as tech companies like to say. Take flight, grab your javelin and fly straight towards the sun. There's a joke about BioWare being Icarus, but it's in bad taste, so don't repeat that. People worked hard on this game. Let's remember that.

If you like it, give Anthem a try. If you still can. You can't actually buy it anymore, but maybe you bought it earlier? Perhaps you played it, enjoyed it, and had an exciting experience. Otherwise, it often happened that I just scooped it up when it was on sale for a ridiculously low price. Or, if you have PlayStation Plus, you can offer a 10-hour trial. You are you. Personally, I don't plan on bothering you, but if you want to get out there and post some nice screenshots of your last ride, I'll check it out. I've always had a strange attachment to this game.
