Half-Life 3 is the only thing Valve fans really care about right now. Various insiders are constantly teasing a potential announcement that could happen at any time. No, really, tomorrow is definitely the day. Definitely this time.
It's worth noting that despite the current Half-Life 3 craze, other Valve games exist. One of them is Team Fortress 2. Over the past year, there have been rumors that Valve would potentially revisit the series. This was sparked by the mysterious 'TF' codename discovered in datamines of other Valve games such as Deadlock and Counter-Strike 2.
Personally, I'm hoping this is a sign that Valve is secretly buying Titanfall from EA and making a third game, but this codename almost certainly stands for Team Fortress, and it was revealed by dataminers earlier this year that 'TF' got a new feature that overhauled the decal system and was pushed into Source 2's base engine. In English, this essentially means that Valve is almost certainly working on something related to Team Fortress, whether it's a new game or a tech demo.
It looks like Team Fortress 2 is being ported to Source 2.
However, a new discovery from a dataminer seems to suggest that Valve may be attempting to port Team Fortress 2 in its entirety to the Source 2 engine. According to a datamine for Counter-Strike 2 first shared by Valve YouTuber Tyler McVicker, Valve has updated the Source 1 import to not only provide the ability to import the func_respawnroomvisualizer entity (specifically the flashy red wall that prevents enemies from entering your spawn room in Team Fortress 2), but also “improved map splitting between prefab buildings.”
This means two things: Firstly, this pretty much confirms that TF is indeed referring to Team Fortress, as was already expected, but it also seems to imply that Valve is porting the Team Fortress 2 maps to Source 2.
“This is effectively direct confirmation that there is a team at Valve working on porting Team Fortress 2 to Source 2 for some reason.”
This is a very interesting discovery, but the question still remains as to why Valve is doing this. McVicker speculates that this could be anything from a remaster of Team Fortress 2 to the creation of a new game. However, thanks to Valve's long consideration of this 'TF' project, McVicker believes we can safely rule out that this game is a tech demo, as previous tech demos made by Valve were released within a much shorter period of time.
Finally, McVicker provides an even more sobering reminder that this mysterious 'TF' project has been in production for so little time that Valve may decide to put everything on hold and not care. Nothing is guaranteed at this time and most of the information we have right now is just speculation. However, this is a sign that Valve is continuing their work with Team Fortress for now, so fingers crossed we'll actually see what this is.
