Final Fantasy Tactics Fans Upgrade Ramza's Ivalice Chronicles Job Class

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles rules most of them. Although disappointed by the lack of exclusive content for the 2007 PSP version of this original PS1 all-timer, fans have already addressed this to an impressive degree for the recent remake PC version with the addition of class classes from The War of the Lions.

The hard-working FFT modding community is once again revamping protagonist Ramza Beoulve's custom class into an even more attractive class.

Noble Mercenary Heretic

Ramza as a heretic.

There's something to be said for Final Fantasy Tactics' traditional approach to Ramza's job class. He was little more than a squire when he abandoned the Knights of the Southern Sky to pursue his own brave path. So it's only natural that he retains the most common job title with the “Squire” class. By the fourth and final chapter – to be fair, the fourth chapter is closer to two-fifths of the way through the game – he takes on the role of the “Gallant Knight” instead.

I like that, and I also like that Ramza gains some unique abilities befitting a natural leader on the battlefield. But the truth is that his lack of cool sword skills holds him back, and it's somewhat disappointing that he maintains the ability pool of the Squire class with only a handful of Beoulve class skills. Many fans have agreed on this front for literally decades, as previous versions of Final Fantasy Tactics were modified to change this state of affairs. Now Ivalice Chronicles has its first competitor.

“This mod gives Ramza's squire class a unique class name over the course of the game. Additionally, becoming a Heretic gives Ramza access to the Fallen Blade of Gaffgarion ability.” -Servagz

Modder Serbagz added the “Heretic Ramza” tweak to Nexus Mods earlier this month, and the most recent update was on November 17th. They noted that this is “really just a small mod we made ourselves for TIC play,” but there are “various versions” in case people find the standard version of Heretic Ramza overly simplistic.

In its basic form, the mod does the following:

  • In Chapter 1, Ramza's Squire class was renamed Noble.

  • In Chapters 2 and 3, the Squire class is renamed to Mercenary.

  • Finally, in Chapter 4, the name changes to Heretic and Ramza gains the Fell Knight's Shadowblade and Duskblade skills.

There are three alternatives:

  • Heretic Ramza – Ark Knight Edition changes things up so that Ramza gains Zalbaag's Ark Knight ability instead.

  • Heretic Ramza – Dark Knight Edition gives him a full set of Dark Knight sword skills and requires the aforementioned Dark Night and Onion Knight mods.

  • Heretic Ramza – Sword Saint Edition is the ultimate winner as it offers an “extended version of Orlando's Swordplay”. To put it simply, it gives Ramza everything Orlando had: all the swordplay plus princess/priest abilities.

All versions of the Heretic mode increase the strength of Ramza's Ultima attacks. This is highly appreciated. Unfortunately, Sword Saint Edition is currently experiencing some technical issues, but we hope these will be resolved in due course.
