Unlike film and music, where awards seasons typically take place in February and March, video game awards season begins with the Golden Joystick Awards, where Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did a clean-up, and concludes with The Game Awards, which recently revealed all of its recent nominees ahead of the December ceremony.
As expected, Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach are all nominated for Game of the Year and several other awards, and assuming there isn't another delay in 2026, Grand Theft Auto 6 is widely expected to dominate nearly every category.
Good news, I'm now officially starting to hate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
After receiving 12 nominations at The Game Awards, people seem to be turning their backs on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
If things continue, it's likely that GTA 6 will surpass The Witcher 3, one of the most nominated and successful titles of the year. But if that bothers Doug Cockle, the voice actor of Geralt of Rivia, one bit, the answer is a resounding no.
Geralt of Rivia may be the first person to have no interest in Grand Theft Auto 6 at all.
In an interview with GamesRadar during the Golden Joystick Awards, Cockle was told that GTA 6 could surpass The Witcher 3's all-time record of 10 awards over four years, and in response, Cockle made it clear that he's not really interested in the awards season battle.
“Oh, this is a game I really don’t care for,” Cockle said. “I think Witcher 3 is a great game. When GTA 6 comes out, it'll probably be a great game. So whatever it is, yeah. Enjoy the game and have fun.”
ouch!
That night, Grand Theft Auto 6 began its pre-release awards season streak, winning both “Best Game Trailer” and “Most Wanted Game.” That means there were the same number of trailers or the same number of delays that we experienced.
That means that for GTA 6 to match the power of The Witcher 3, it will need to not only be nominated in multiple categories, but actually win. During its run, TW3 swept categories like “Best Storytelling,” “Best Actor,” and “Best Game Moment.” I'm sure GTA 6 will be nominated, but I'm not sure if GTA 6 will necessarily win these awards.
Barring any delays, we'll find out within a year whether it matches or overtakes The Witcher 3. Then I'm sure I'll ask Cockle again for his thoughts. Maybe he will change his attitude, but Geralt seems to really want to live his life.

We don't know if the Arc Raiders will be eligible for a GOTY nomination until 2030
Arc Raiders may have been left out of GOTY, but multiplayer games have always been judged differently.
