We finally know for sure that Bowser Jr. will appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and it looks like he'll have a pretty big role. What Nintendo didn't expect following the reveal of Bowser Jr were the Prowler comparisons, which ranged from fans who thought it was a neat homage to those who suggested Sony's legal team might want to get involved.
The Galaxy Movie's first look at Bowser Jr. included the antagonist attacking Mario and Luigi as they attempted to save their little father. That quick clip shows Bowser Jr. playing Super Mario Bros. It included transforming into Wonder Bowser Jr, an unexpected hat tip to Wonder. Despite the movie's name being Galaxy, there's more evidence that it will include more than just a mention of the Galaxy.
We also saw Mario and Luigi racing towards the inverted pyramid in Super Mario Odyssey.
The sound effects are very similar to the Prowler's Spider-Verse theme.
Even more unexpected was the sound we heard when Bowser Jr. pulled out his mace. If you're a fan of the Spider-Verse movies and still aren't in awe of seeing Bowser Jr. wearing his Wonder gear on the big screen, you might have noticed that the theme that plays at that exact moment in the trailer is very similar to the theme that plays when the Prowler appears on screen in Into the Spider-Verse.
Whether you thought that at the moment, or you're thinking that now after watching the trailer again, you're not alone. Daniel Pemberton, composer of the Elephant Prowler theme used in Into the Spider-Verse, also noticed this. Pemberton asked the fan who shared the clip why it sounded familiar. Pemberton responded, “Yes, I recognize that sound.”
In case people aren't sure what Pemberton is getting at, or aren't familiar with his work, the composer re-shared a clip from 2018 that shows how he created the sound that has become synonymous with the Prowler's appearance in Into the Spider-Verse. It's so synonymous that, seven years after the movie was released, many people heard it in the Galaxy of the Galaxy movie trailer and immediately connected it to the Spider-Verse.
A select few also called Bowser Jr's “new” design and claimed it copied the Prowler. Those people might not realize that the design is based on Wonder Bowser Jr.
When I listened to the two songs over and over again, they actually sounded very similar. Some might argue that they are almost identical. Sony is working on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but it has nothing to do with it. The creators of the Mario movies have nothing to do with the creators of the Spider-Verse trilogy. Maybe it's just a coincidence that the themes sound so similar, or maybe there's more to this.
