Our library of open world games continues to grow every year, but sometimes it's nice to take a step back in time and experience a masterclass from a very different era. And as it turns out, there are actually quite a few older games that feel more relevant now than ever or are directly tied to 2026 in some way, shape, or form.
This could be due to an upcoming sequel or remaster that revives the fan base, or in some cases, tie-in media such as a show that bridges the gap between the virtual and real worlds. Whatever the case, these games may be literally old, but the gameplay and stories within them are like fine wine that only gets better with age.

One of the best crime stories of its genre
with mafia A series that is attracting attention again with its latest work, old countryThere's never been a better time to revisit the game that started it all. text mafia Following Tommy Angelo's rise in the Salieri family during an incredibly hot period in American history, it remains an incredibly grounded crime drama, and its emphasis on storytelling over spectacle helps set it apart from other open world crime games of the day and time.
The world is more limited than modern sandbox titles, but I think the atmosphere and believable nature of the cities allow it to remain timeless even 20 years later. For anyone interested in seeing how the series has developed or simply experiencing one of the genre's defining stories, now is an ideal opportunity to step back in time and play the entire series.

Mods keep the game feeling fresh
Few games have enjoyed such longevity. SkyrimAnd we continue to be excited around its final release. The Elder Scrolls VIMany players and I returned to Tamriel. Whether it's your first adventure or your tenth, this game is one of the most fantasy worlds worth exploring, and adding mods to the mix that can bring everything from new content to QoL changes can make your entire playthrough feel radically different.
I'm still amazed by how much content the community has created, and even after my frankly lukewarm arrival of star field And with Bethesda's relative inactivity in recent years, it's nice to play an excellent RPG with an endless stream of variety from start to finish. After all, there's a reason this game is one of the best-selling games of all time and a true poster child for the pinnacle of Bethesda game design. This is something I hope we see again in the next installment.
Let's be honest, we've all played. SkyrimSo this is closer to replay. PC users should try installing several mods if they aren't already immersed in the community.

shadow of chernobyl has continued to captivate hearts since its release, and the world of radiation fiction has become much more crowded since then. This series stalker 2Many new players are introduced to the haunting Exclusion Zone and all the darkness that lurks within.
Going back to the original also highlights how influential the design was, as core features like the dynamic AI system find their way into countless other games both within and outside of the open-world space. Now, new DLC for the sequel is coming soon. There is no reason why you should return to study and travel to the wilderness for the first time or experience it like the first time.

It has the following roles: RDR2 story
red dead redemption For years it was incredibly difficult to access on modern platforms, but thankfully you can now play John Marston's moving story in its entirety on just about any new device. While the narrative is clearly the biggest draw, the gameplay holds up surprisingly well, another example of Rockstar proving that they are one of the best game developers around.
The original game is also the perfect companion to the following game. Red Dead Redemption 2After Arthur Morgan's story, John's story continues. This adds an extra level of closure and wraps up the arc perfectly, while leaving plenty of room for fun, including: undead nightmare.

It is still considered a masterpiece in RPGs.
with fallout In a series that introduces many people to Bethesda's post-apocalyptic world, many will inevitably discover something new. Fallout: New Vegas. Even after all these years, Obsidian's RPG still remains a benchmark for player choice and narrative branching, and you'll be amazed at how much control you have over the story from the beginning.
I would also say that the show presents the setting of Las Vegas in a very faithful way, introduces you to Robert House and the Deathclaws, and serves as a good starting point for next season. if you are interested fallout Whether as a series or simply if you want to experience one of the best RPGs ever made, 2026 is a better time than ever.

New revival scheduled for 2027

A charming and whimsical world
fable is another RPG that many fans have been waiting for a reboot, and after many announcements and delays, the new 2027 release date should be the final release date. The original game stands out for its witty humor and charm that permeates every interaction, and offers plenty of choice in terms of shaping your hero, with your reputation determined by your actions rather than just your dialogue choices.
Mechanically, there's a lot of impressive stuff on display, including a morality system and satisfying yet accessible combat that remains surprisingly enjoyable even decades later. Revisiting the original provides a great opportunity to see how much the upcoming reboot builds on such a beloved classic, and I'm so excited for the new game after becoming a fan of the franchise this year.
fable Another classic that features a quasi-open world, but with enough room to explore that it deserves a mention.

Gothic
The RPG train never ends
details:
-
A cruel design that is different from today’s
-
A complete modern remake and re-release.
Gothic has long been considered one of the most influential RPGs ever made, and the remake suddenly turned the attention of longtime fans and newcomers alike to the original. The game is uncompromising in its cruelty, thrusting you into a world where nothing is gained and everything is taken, forcing you to slowly move forward one step at a time.
For me, playing a remake is a double-edged sword in many ways. On the one hand, the combat and feel have been modernized and the clunkiness has been removed, but I'd say those things are part of the core difficulty of the original. So, if you prefer the older style and challenge, we recommend trying the classic version before opting for the remake.

grand theft auto 4
Still the best in the franchise

It contrasts sharply with Rockstar's modern design philosophy.
-
Warm-up for release GTA 4
grand theft auto 6 It's been dominating the discussion for the past few years, but before Rockstar breaks the internet, it's worth taking a trip down memory lane with the best games in the series. grand theft auto 4 It stands out because of its grounded storytelling, realistic tone, and Niko Bellic's emotionally complex protagonist. His motivations create a much more compelling narrative than many of the other entries in the franchise.
Revisiting Liberty City also highlights how much Rockstar's design philosophy has changed in 2008. Immersion is key, the world's maturity holds up exceptionally well, and you'll ultimately be hard-pressed to find a modern open-world game that can compete with the quality Rockstar produces time and time again.
