Zelda VA Patricia Summersett details Link and Zelda's “gorgeous relationship”.

Patricia Somerset is absolutely gorgeous. She has voiced the main character of The Legend of Zelda better than anyone else and has a wealth of insight. She also has some personal favorites, one of which is a really cool rendition of “Twilight Princess Hylian.” As you can see.

Summersett also had to deal with some serious misunderstandings regarding what she said when asked about Zelda and Link's relationship. In a recent interview, she took the opportunity to further clarify that frankly, it should have been necessary to do so from the beginning. But here it is!

Relationships come in many forms

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda are walking through a dark, narrow cave with only a torch to light the way.

IGN sat down with the prolific voice actor to chat about a variety of topics, including his excitement about the upcoming feature film that will see Bo Bragason take on the iconic role. (She's just as curious as we are about whether Link will talk. Personally, I hope he doesn't, but we'll see.)

The interview inevitably touched on Somerset's beliefs about the nature of the relationship between his lead duo. Especially in the two big games she was involved in: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. (Other games include the Age of Calamity and Age of Imprisonment spinoffs, both of which were cool in their own right.) She said she had to be careful with each answer, stating her answer:

“…I have all sorts of personal theories about what this is, but I think there's something beautiful about it being left ambiguous. If there's a romantic undertone, it remains unrequited. There's definitely a relationship of deep friendship and protection between the two people. It's a wonderful relationship and it continues to evolve and continues to be open.”

Beautifully said. Similarly, Summersett states that “[has] You have to be careful with the word 'unrequited love,'” she explains. “They could be friends, a warrior's friend, a princess and a soldier, lovers, people destined to be together, even if in a non-romantic way, but they will maintain a lifelong friendship.” Too often in media we think we see characters shoehorned together. will be I'd love to see an iteration of Zelda and Link at some point to make things less ambiguous, but it's not a requirement. It was handled well.

Summersett cited Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess as his favorite entries in the franchise. (Tears of the Poor Kingdom!) The interviewer pointed out that, in their assessment, Twilight Princess still has a mixed reception among fans. well…

“I see a lot of Twilight Princess cosplay at conventions, and I also write about Twilight Princess Hylian, so I feel a little more connected to that game when I write notes to people.”

Naturally, this prompted interviewer Tom Phillips to elaborate further on that point. While researching the Hyrule Historia Encyclopedia, she explained, “I saw Twilight Princess Hylian and it was so beautiful. I thought I could learn those letters, which are essentially the alphabet, and I started practicing while drinking coffee. So now I can write fluently and use them all the time.” That makes sense, and I think it's definitely simpler than the Chinese characters I've been studying in my spare time lately. Nonetheless, it's a bad thing.
