Despite the number of Pokémon games, you might think that there's still quite a bit to get from all the mainline games. Well, I think you're wrong. In fact, with the release of Pokemon Legends: ZA, there's technically only one Pokemon left that can be found without hacks or cheats in any game since Red & Blue, and that Pokemon is Magikarp.
Magikarp, the final Pokémon to appear in the series, was highlighted by JPRPT98 on Twitter, who also noted that Gyarados is technically eligible as well. Because it evolves into the Pokemon Magikarp. Pokémon fans have since thrown up scenarios trying to refute Magikarp's superiority, but with every failed attempt, the argument that Magikarp is the only survivor has grown stronger.
In the ever-changing world of Pokémon, Magikarp is the only constant
If you didn't know that every major Pokémon game included Magikarp, when you asked which Pokémon appeared in all of them, you probably would have chosen Pikachu against the odds. However, as was the case with many of the Kanto Pokémon that had appeared in every game up to that point, TPC's most famous creation was missing from Black & White.
If you've ever seen Pikachu in black and white, it's because it was transferred.
Game Freak decided to fill Unova with new creations, and even Magikarp was pretty much left on the cutting room floor. We wouldn't be having this conversation right now if it wasn't for the salesman giving away Pokemon from the amazing bridge in Black and White.
The next obstacle that the Pokémon that appeared in every game had to overcome was Sword & Shield. This is the first game in the series where you can't get every Pokémon ever created. Magnemite and Psyduck almost had to be abandoned, but both Gen 1 stalwarts kept their records intact even after being added to the game via DLC.
Now we're in Lumiose City and once again Magnemite and Psyduck are nowhere to be found. These were the only Pokémon left (or floating, in Magnemite's case) other than Magikarp, and Magikarp is currently the only Pokémon of the three that can be caught in Pokemon Legends: ZA.
That doesn't mean Magikarp will be alone at the top forever. As was the case with Galar, if Legends: ZA receives DLC, Pokémon that previously shared history may appear. But for now, Magikarp reigns supreme. Beware of Alpha 1 lurking in Wild Zone 2. This pet knows the Hydropump and isn't afraid to use it.
