I didn't count the number of soft resets. Pokemon Firered and LeafgreenI had to put up with the Shiny Starter, but I received the Squirtle in about 43 hours. Actually I spent about 40-41 hours looking for Charmander and switched around a few times just to make it less hard on my brain, but ended up getting a shiny Squirtle instead. I like all three Kanto starters, so I have no problem with this at all. But the fact that you have to change your goals every now and then to keep from going crazy is a big red flag. I saw at least 5,700 starters before finding Squirtle, averaging about 27 seconds per reset using the turbo controller.

With a 27-second reset, you're very likely to see up to 40% of the same Pokémon overall. That means up to 17 hours were completely wasted.
The problem is that 1 in 5,700 is actually incredibly lucky. Considering many people have needed over 10,000 or even 20,000 resets for just one shiny starter. After all, 1 in 8,192 is a mathematical average, not a rule. As for the elephant in the room: Yes, it felt more gratifying and rewarding than finding a shiny Pokémon in the room.
