free tier Xbox cloud gaming According to new insights from a prominent Microsoft insider, it's reportedly coming soon. The same source also shared a first look at the upcoming Xbox service.
Originally launched as xCloud, Microsoft's game streaming service has been available in select markets since November 2019 as an exclusive benefit of Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft expanded Xbox Cloud Gaming to all non-PC Game Pass tiers in August 2025, but access to it was initially tied to the service's Ultimate tier. Three months later, the company revealed that it was exploring the possibility of launching a free, ad-supported tier of the service, confirming months of rumors on the matter.
Xbox Game Pass will add massive AAA open-world games starting in 2024
Xbox Game Pass adds a massive selection of open-world games, making it the first AAA title of 2026 and fourth overall since the start of the year.
Ad-supported Xbox cloud gaming tier reportedly offers 1-hour sessions
The long-rumored premium membership is finally set to launch, according to The Verge senior editor Tom Warren. A prominent Microsoft insider who visited BlueSky on January 16th shared what appears to be an Xbox promotional image advertising “1 hour of ad-supported playtime per session,” specifically linking it to the ad-supported Xbox cloud gaming tier and describing it as “coming soon.” Warren did not disclose the source of the image, which features an airplane icon with a design roughly similar to the artwork used throughout the Xbox app.
Reported on how the free tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming works
According to one of Warren's previous reports, Microsoft has been internally testing a free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming since at least early October 2025. At the time, Insider said the test included a step where users would have to watch about two minutes of ads before being able to stream the title via Xbox Cloud Gaming. The original report did not suggest that ads would be inserted mid-game or disrupt gameplay sessions. The image Warren shared on January 16 appears to indicate that free sessions can run for up to an hour, but it's unclear whether a single pre-roll ad segment can consistently unlock the full 60 minutes, or whether additional ad insertions can break the session down further.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is currently in the lead with Game Pass, but Warren reports that an ad-supported version of the service will be available as a completely standalone tier. The free plan is expected to support the same streaming catalog as the paid version, including most Xbox Game Pass titles and a growing number of titles labeled “Stream Your Own Game” (SYOG). The library was most recently expanded in late December 2025 with approximately 50 additional games, including: blood west, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, resident evil 3and Octopath Traveler 0. Most of the new Xbox Game Pass additions also feature Xbox Cloud Gaming support if you have the console version, as Microsoft's streaming infrastructure is built on custom Xbox Series X hardware. However, titles outside of Game Pass are rarely available for cloud streaming through the SYOG program.
Xbox Cloud Gaming's premium tier is expected to be available on all platforms currently supported by the rest of the service, including Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and mobile devices. The same goes for handhelds, including everything from the Windows-based ROG Xbox Ally X to the Linux-based Steam Deck. Geographically, the free service is expected to launch in all countries where the paid service is already available. The list currently spans 29 countries, including all of North America, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Based on Microsoft's track record of launching new consumer platforms, the ad-supported Xbox cloud gaming tier will likely debut as a public beta before being made available to all eligible customers.
