Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn Eclipsed set is released with Homecoming 19 years after the original Lorwyn block. According to Wizards of the Coast's metrics, Lorwyn wasn't a commercial success, but the trailer for Lorwyn Eclipsed was one of the most viewed trailers in gaming history, so the story may be very different now. Besides, MTG Fans are pouring in their love for Lorwyn Eclipsed on social media and forums, showing that there is indeed a vibrant world to explore in this dimension. Between great main set cards and some value-packed precon Commander decks, Magic: The Gathering's next set contains a lot of the hype, and one particular commander deserves your attention.
Despite the problematic Universe Beyond discourse; MTGNot all 2025 UB sets received the same response, even those from 2026 before they were released. MTG's Avatar set featured incredibly powerful cards, and many of the newly added cards became community favorites regardless of fans' experience with the IP. A standout choice among them is The Walls of Ba Sing Se, a 0/30 wall with Defender that makes other permanents indestructible. This card already had some good strategies, but Lorwyn Eclipsed adds another commander that makes 0/30 creatures even brighter.
Lorwyn Eclipsed in Magic: The Gathering may finally reset a long-term pattern.
Magic: The Gathering's 2026 schedule kicks off with Lorwyn Eclipsed in January, likely breaking a trend that has persisted since August 2024.
Say hello to Doran from MTG Besieged by Time
The basic set for Lorwyn Eclipsed is: MTG Includes a card called Doran, Besieged by Time. This is a 4-CMC (1 common, 1 white, 1 black, 1 green) 0/5 legendary creature that lowers the casting cost of creature spells with toughness greater than its power by 1, and causes the attacking or blocking creature to get +X/+X until the end of its turn. Here, X is the difference between attack power and defense power.
On EDHREC, a website used to track MTG commanders and possible combos (including unreleased ones), the new Doran, Besieged by Time card is the fourth most popular card. Here is the chart:
-
High Perfect Mokant – 2,057 decks
-
Maralen, Fay Ascendant – 1,145 decks
-
Eirdu, Bearer of Dawn / Isilu, Bearer of Dusk – 1,015 decks
-
Doran Surrounded by Time – Deck 624
There is another version of Doran, the Siege Tower. Siege Tower is instead a 3-mana 0/5 creature that allows the creature to allocate combat damage with toughness. This can be played with the time-struck Doran due to MTG's legendary rules.
How Lorwyn Eclipsed Created Avatar's Greatest Creature OP in MTG
This card already combos with itself and becomes a 5/10 every time it attacks or blocks, but it breaks down Ba Sing Se's walls even further for a few reasons.
-
Doran, surrounded by time, is relatively inexpensive. MTG It's a 4-mana Commander and makes Wall of Ba Sing Se easier and faster to cast, which can be problematic for 8-mana creatures.
-
Doran's Azban identity (white, black, green) means: MTG Mana Gems are easily accessible in the deck, making it easier to increase mana production, which is another advantage of The Walls.
-
-
Walls of Ba Sing Se can be used with Doran and Felothar the Steadfast in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander deck.
-
Doran makes The Walls a 30/60 creature when it attacks or blocks, so Felothar allows The Walls to attack even if it has a defender and assigns combat damage equal to its toughness, and if you spend 3 mana and tap Felothar, you can sacrifice The Walls to draw 60 cards and discard 30 if The Walls attacks or blocks.
-
-
Jaws of Defeat is a 4-CMC Black spell that can be played in a Doran/Walls deck to cause your opponent to lose 30 life (the difference between Ba Sing Se's Wall's power and toughness) when the creature enters the battlefield.
-
This also applies to the white blink effects used on the walls of Ba Sing Se, such as Ephemerate, Last Blink and Restoration Angel. It also works with: MTGThis is the avatar mechanic of Airbending.
-
-
Arbor Adherent can make the Doran + Walls combo generate at least 60 mana. This is because it adds mana equal to the greatest toughness of any creature you control.
-
Enchantments and temporary effects like Stoneskin, which gives enchanted creatures +0/+10, can further improve the Doran + Walls combo. Because as the strength of Ba Sing Se's wall increases, so does its power when attacking or blocking (and its strength increases even further).
-
Refusal to Surrender is a 2 mana instant. MTG A spell that gives a creature +2/+7. That means Wall becomes a 39/74 creature when it attacks or blocks.
-
-
Unnatural Growth is a spell that costs 1 mana of any color and 4 green, granting a creature you control double strength and toughness at the start of combat. Without any additional effects, the Doran + The Walls combo would make The Walls of Ba Sing Se an incredible 60/120.
-
Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus is a 7-mana 4/6 creature with the same effect and stacks. With Doran, The Walls, Unnatural Growth, and Zopandrel on the field, Ba Sing Se's Walls can reach a whopping 0/120 before attacking or blocking, and 120/240 when attacking or blocking.
-
-
Using cards like Primal Rage, a two-mana spell that tramples creatures, is highly recommended to reduce the chances of your combos failing in combat.
-
Canopy Gargantuan is a 7-mana 7/7 creature that allows you to put a number of +1/+1 counters on each creature you control at the beginning of each upkeep equal to that creature's toughness. That means Doran will be 5/10 before combat and Walls will be 30/60 (so when attacking or blocking they will be 15/20 and 90/120 respectively). After just one turn, your strength and toughness increase exponentially.
The wall of Ba Sing Se combos in MTG can spiral out of control.
As you can see, there are many ways to take this combo to the next level, and using multiple cards expands it to surprising numbers. For example, if Doran, The Walls of Ba Sing Se, Unnatural Growth, Zopandrel, and Hunger Dominus are all played, what happens after 2 turns of Canopy Gargantuan? The answer is that The Walls becomes a 90/120 creature before it attacks or blocks, and at some point becomes a 360/480 creature. yes. To be honest, once you have your original combo set up, you don't need all of this to win, you just need to defend The Walls from potential elimination. But be careful. This playstyle can quickly and easily make you the definition of an adversary. MTG Commander game.
