I think gaming audiences generally need slightly higher standards for storytelling. Because it feels like we're combining production value and fidelity with good writing. Perhaps this is why I cannot participate in arguments about games such as: Horizon Forbidden West and Mafia: Old Country It has an amazing story. I think these games have fantastic visuals and art design, not just fantastic writing. They mostly look and move like movies, but lack the substance of truly great movies, novels, and TV shows.
If you're feeling similarly dissatisfied with the flood of modern “story-driven” games, I have good news. There are plenty of shocking video game stories out there, but they don't always seem to be popular pieces in the PlayStation Studios press. In my opinion, one of the games that never gets enough love is PentimentObsidian Entertainment's 2022 RPG is the developer's best-written project yet. If you like history, literature, choice-based gameplay, and storytelling that actually feels mature, nuanced, and complex. Pentiment This is the game for you. Many people overlook this. Don't allow yourself to become one of them.
Pentiment is a must-play for history lovers.
One of my favorite novel series is Ken Follett's novels. KingsbridgeAlso commonly referred to as that pillar of the earth. Although each book is set several centuries apart, the first few entries are set in the Middle Ages and Middle Ages and follow nuns, priests, and monks in a fictional English village. Crucially, the series takes a sympathetic, sensitive, and humanistic look at the lives of religious servants, and in doing so becomes a useful tool for better understanding this period of history beyond distilled facts and figures.
Pentiment In this respect they are quite similar. The setting is Bavaria, a time of economic and religious upheaval in 16th-century Europe. Players take on the role of Andreas Maler, a humble painter who visits the fictional town of Tassing to complete his apprenticeship. Andreas is charming and affable (depending on how you play him), but he is nonetheless caught up in a confusing murder plot involving church intrigue, ancient Roman history, and close-knit social conflict.

Much more multifaceted than it first appears, this story spans decades, allowing players to fully absorb the depth of this fictional world. The counterweight to this enormous scope is its relatively pedestrian nature. Pentiment's characters have no significant power over Tassing. Most of the cast are monks, artists, nuns and workers who keep Tassing functioning and thriving. This focus on the general public Pentimentgood night KingsbridgeA useful supplementary tool for learning about this period of history. But more importantly, it makes the story much more emotionally impactful and relatable. Especially when you consider the impact you can have on it.
It's more than just a picture book: Pentiment's choice-based narrative is deep and engaging. Anyone familiar with Obsidian's other works, especially games like: Fallout: New Vegas and pillar of eternityYou probably already know what level of freedom you can expect. Pentiment.
Without going too deep into spoilers, suffice it to say that players, as Andreas, can decide the ultimate fate of several different characters, allowing the broader narrative to change and settle based on their presence or absence. Andreas' background is highly customizable at various points in the story, and these elements have a significant impact on how he and the player interact with the world. For example, if you select the language Andreas speaks, you will be able to understand dialogue in that language within the game. If Andreas doesn't understand a particular language, neither do you.
In short, PentimentThe gameplay of is all about results. The choices don't feel trivial or contrived, and in a way it actually feels like you're not tied down. The game doesn't intervene to prevent you from making “wrong” choices. Even if it means sending an innocent person to death. This bold and unwavering approach to choice-driven storytelling Pentiment It stands out from other impressive or impeccably written story games like: Disco Elysium, citizen slippersAnd then there are some of Obsidian Entertainment's own RPGs, which are renowned for being solid, flexible, and well-written in their own right.
I hope I have done a competent delivery job. PentimentThe strengths of are so many and varied that they are somewhat difficult to define in plain English. But the problem is this: Pentiment It's only $20 and “free” if you have Game Pass, so it's not a risky investment. If you're looking for a killer story, you're twice as likely to find something to appreciate about it. No pun intended.
