The RPCS3 emulator provides updates on library status.

In a breakthrough in emulation and overall game preservation, virtually the entire PlayStation 3 library can now be played through the RPCS3 emulator. Notably, 62 games remain in the “introduction” stage, down from 101, according to a new update from the project's developers.

46 of the 62 games are PlayStation Move titles, and once this is figured out, the viral PS3 emulation tool pretty much

“Project Complete” status.

Currently, 73.06% of the PS3 library is classified as “playable.” This means that you can complete the game without any serious glitches, hiccups, or bugs that hinder your progress. An additional 25.12% are “in-game” and can be played but not completed.

No one knows the PlayStation touchpad better than Sucker Punch.

Using a PlayStation controller hasn't felt this much fun since Infamous Second Son.

The project, which started in 2011, is described as follows:

RPCS3 is a multi-platform open source Sony PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger written in C++ for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The goal of this project is to fully and accurately emulate the entire Sony PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system through the power of the open source community and reverse engineering.

Our goal is to preserve its legacy and extensive library by bringing PlayStation 3 hardware and its exclusives to the PC platform. We aim to achieve this by targeting and supporting a variety of operating systems and being compatible with a wide range of computer hardware with realistic requirements.

This is a massive task and one that is very important as most PlayStation 3 games are stuck on the system. Similar emulators have also found success aimed at preserving the entire PlayStation 4 library.

Too much of your PS3 library is stranded

There's been some progress in releasing some of the PlayStation 3's best titles, but there's still too much that's not readily available. Titles like the Killzone and Resistance trilogies, inFamous duology, and Ratchet and Clank are still only available on consoles and are now also available through emulation.

For what it's worth, the main locked title, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is now available in Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 means you have one less game to worry about. Additionally, the first three God of War titles are being remade.

Still, fans have long dreamed of a native emulation of Sony's current hardware offerings, similar to what Xbox offers. Until then, it's all just “streaming” and it's not as perfect as it sounds.
