The Pokémon fanned Gengar's flames. Clefable's shadow fan theory.

Pokemon celebrated Valentine's Day by sharing a fun and innocent-looking image. One of them shows Gengar and Clefable holding hands. Those of you who have come across various fan theories about Pokémon will know that some people believe Gengar is Clefable's shadow, and that Pokémon confirmed that theory to be reality in a Valentine's post years later.

Pokémon shared two colorful images to celebrate Valentine's Day weekend. One features Psyduck, while the other depicts Clefable and Gengar holding hands. I think about 90% of people who follow Pokémon on social media either scroll right over, pause to admire, or even hit a like.

Pokemon fans believe Gengar is Clefable's shadow.

The remaining 10% of people I'm proud of instantly make or break Valentine's Day. Because it rekindled the theory that Gengar is Clefable's shadow. It's a theory that's been bubbling under the surface for years, rooted in two Pokémon with incredibly similar silhouettes, but there's more to it than just having the same boyish look.

Fans have added layers to the theory, with some convinced that there must be some truth to it, based on the perception that Gengar and Clefable look similar. Part of the theory stems from Clefairy originally being the first choice to lead the franchise over Pikachu. This means that Clefairy and Clefable were also among the first Pokémon designed.

Gengar is also known to be one of the original designs, so he may be one of the first Pokemon fans to battle Nidorino when launching Pokemon Red. But there's more to this theory. Gengar's Ghost type is the opposite of Clefable's Normal type. This means that individual STAB (same type attack bonus) attacks do not affect each other.

You can't hurt your shadow, and your shadow can't hurt you.

Are you sure?

All of this is why some Pokemon fans believe Gengar was designed to be Clefable's shadow. That's also why Pokemon's Valentine's Day post at least seems pointed. That may not be confirmation that the theory is true, or maybe it's just an acknowledgment that the Pokémon Company is well aware of the things we cook and share on message boards.

We already knew that the Pokemon people were watching what we were doing. If you didn't, chances are you'd have another Eeveelution by now. Pokemon was believed to have designed a flying-type evolution for Eevee, but the idea was scrapped after discovering fan art that looked very similar. All I hope is that someone at TPC or Game Freak read my ramblings about Mr. Mime potentially being Ash's dad.
