At this point, I don't think it's clear if even Bethesda is making remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. We have plenty of hints or teasers that suggest they are in the works. From Steam glitches to show ads and even an unexpected countdown, fans have pointed to everything as evidence that a remaster announcement is imminent.
While we have to wait and see if the remaster is real, fans have decided to resurrect the original version of Fallout 3. In the early 2000s, Black Isle Studios was working on Fallout 3, codenamed Van Buren. Unfortunately, it never saw the light of day and the studio closed. Fallout: The New West is a fan-made project to bring back the lost games of New Vegas (thanks, PC Gamer).
New New West
This isn't the first time Fallout fans have attempted to revive the project. A few years ago, Project Van Buren aimed to rebuild the game from scratch. However, The New West aims to do the same thing as New Vegas' mod. That's because many of the original Van Buren's assets were recycled for the game.
This revival seems to be going pretty well, as it's shown off a few assets and even a trailer. “In many ways, it tells the same broad story as Fallout: Van Buren envisioned, but reimagined and expanded to form a cohesive and playable experience,” the project website says. They released a demo last year, but it had a different name and was a bit different from what The New West was trying to do.
Remembering the strangest and worst Fallout game ever made.
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is far from a Fallout game, but it's an eye-opening trainwreck.
“Unfortunately, because many of Van Buren’s concepts are included in FNV, the projects cannot be set on the same schedule,” the description continues. “Our secondary goal is to incorporate many of the modern gameplay conveniences introduced through Fallout: New Vegas and over 15 years of modding, while retaining the unique mechanics and design characteristics of classic Fallout found in the original design documents.”
