Magic: The Gathering Because we are entering a new era Avatar: The Last Airbender The set was officially released just a few days ago, and it's currently seeing several format changes due to new cards and the November 10th ban. Magic: The Gathering It absolutely killed the infamous Izzet Cauldron deck that dominated every tournament by hitting Standard the most. Now that the Avatar sets have been released, the meta for each format is inevitably being reshaped, and some cards have already proven to be very powerful. The most notable example is currently Badgermole Cub, but another example could be made for other Mythic rares like Wan Shi Tong, Librarian.
it makes sense Magic: The Gathering Mythic rares are some of the best cards in a particular set. Rarity doesn't always equal value or power, but librarian Wan Shin Tong has plenty of both. This creature can be used to great success in most formats, dramatically changes the course of the game when played, and is a great example of proper card design as it is already the centerpiece of many combos. However, it may be hard to find as it is sold out almost everywhere.
It's time to welcome one of the most broken blue cards in MTG history
There are several reasons why Librarian Wan Shi Tong is a powerful card across many formats. These are;
-
Outside of Standard, where he doesn't have many Tutor-like abilities, Wan Shi Tong can be played with success in most formats, and can respond to a Tutor trigger at any time to immediately gain a +1/+1 counter and draw a card.
-
Wan Shi Tong is OP in Commander and cEDH. The turn cycle involves four players, so multiple Tutors will be used before the next turn, giving the creature a lot of power. This makes it an easy replacement or addition to your Archivist of Oghma deck, and is another powerful element of Blue Farm, cEDH's strongest and most consistent deck.
-
-
Wan Shi Tong, Librarian, can be very powerful as a draw engine in control decks and combo decks like Dimir Mill in Modern or Dimir Tempo in Timeless.
-
Notorious OP Tamiyo the Curious Student // Can be used with Tamiyo the Seasoned Scholar to help trigger it with card draw abilities. Likewise, it can be a mana sink in long games or land decks.
-
-
It allows for amazing combos using cards that aren't very competitive, like Scheming Symmetry and Archive Trap.
-
You can play reactively. MTGThe same goes for fetch lands in . This means it gets bigger and acts as a draw engine for even the more basic teacher abilities that appear in most decks in the game.
-
Powerful staples like Crop Rotation also impact Wan Shi Tong's abilities, making opponents rethink whether they should use certain cards or pursue a given strategy.
-
-
Librarian Wan Shi Tong can be a bit of a stack piece, along with very powerful cards such as: MTG's Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithes, Orcish Bowmasters, and more.
-
Cards like Path to Exile are typically used for removal, but they double as Wan Shi Tong's power-ups if you force your opponent to search their library.
-
-
Because it's a blue card, you can easily use interaction and counterspells like Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship if Wan Shi Tong is your commander, and Flare of Denial in your deck. It also pairs perfectly with the latest Edge of Eternities Quantum Riddler card.
Deck in MTG featuring Wan Shi Tong the Librarian
As you can imagine, librarian Wan Shi Tong feels completely at home in Commander thanks to the power-ups and access to teacher abilities. It might seem like the perfect place to have Wan Shi Tong as a commander, but it might be better in 99. For example, you can get guidance from Weatherlight Captain Sisay to power it yourself and make sure it's always readily available. It also has synergy with Tymna the Weaver in the Blue Farm deck, allowing you to quickly increase the number of cards you can draw.
Additionally, on the popular Play to Win MTG podcast, librarian Wan Shi Tong received 4.9/5 and 5/5 from Dillan and Cam, respectively.
According to mtgtop8.com's competitive deck data from the past two weeks, Wan Shi Tong's numbers are as follows:
-
Modern decks use about 2.5% of the usage.
-
Approximately 0.5% included in Vintage decks
-
About 22.6% usage in cEDH deck
It's even more impressive considering that Sasha Wanshitong came out three days ago, on November 21st.
Why librarian Wan Shi Tong is unlikely to be banned in modern times
Plus, it's so early and the number of OP cards filling the format makes it seem unlikely, but some are speculating that Librarian Wan Shi Tong could be banned from Modern in the long term. Considering that cards like Psychic Frog, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Fatal Push, Force of Negation, Lightning Bolt, Urza's Saga and Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury are all still playable in the format without restrictions, talk of banning Wan Shi Tong may be too early to warrant it at all.
Librarian Wan Shi Tong in MTG is virtually impossible to obtain.
Librarian Wan Shi Tong is already one of the most expensive cards in the Avatar set, averaging $50-60.
-
A few copies are currently selling for $70 on TCGPlayer, but it's very hard to find anywhere else.
-
At the time of this writing, Card Kingdom has six copies available, priced at $60. Copies of the borderless version of Wan Shi Tong are sold out mostly everywhere, and this also applies to the foil version.
-
Librarian Wan Shi Tong is sold out at CoolStuffInc.
-
Nine copies of Wan Shi Tong, Librarian are available from Star City Games for $65 each.
Here's the thing: most of the cards are currently unobtainable unless players pay a few dollars extra for each copy. This may be less of an issue in Commander decks. MTGFans of other formats may already be out of luck, since only one copy of the card is needed.
