Bartholomew thought his fate was sealed, but it turned out that the vial did not contain any kind of poison. It turns out that Shanks was just testing his devotion to Bartolomeo and Luffy. Shanks is arguably the strongest character in the One Piece universe. He has all three types of Haki, and an advanced version is also available.
