Home Alone, Schitt's Creek and Beetlejuice star Catherine O'Hara passed away last week at the age of 71 “after a brief illness.” The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin also joined in the outpouring of support and love for one of the most cherished queer icons and comedians of our generation.
“She could do anything,” Mazin said on the Scriptnotes podcast. “She was 71, a very 71-year-old, and she was funny. And being here in Canada, I knew how proud she was to be Canadian. I know how proud Canada was of her. And Canada has given us more funny people than anywhere else in the world. And she's there with some very, very great people.”
He added, “Cheers to Catherine O’Hara, who is enjoying a fruit drink somewhere in space.” “On behalf of humanity, I would like to express my deepest gratitude. We were lucky to have Catherine O'Hara. We were lucky. I will exchange 1,000 Ben Turpins for one Catherine O'Hara.”
“She was stolen from all of us.”
Mazin explained that before she passed away, she had plans to bring O'Hara back in season 3 of The Last of Us (which could be her last) to reprise her role as Gail Lynch, a Jackson-based psychotherapist who worked with Joel despite killing her husband Eugene.
“Of course, I don’t think it’s a huge spoiler to say she’ll be back on our show,” Mazin explained. “She was really good, but she was stolen from all of us. What makes me angry is that I don't get to see her in other stuff. It's like I don't care about my show. I wanted to see her in other stuff because something else would happen.”
O'Hara's last screen performance was in John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary about her late friend and former co-star, released last October.
