It's no secret that video game fans, especially Bethesda's wider video game fans, have been waiting a long time for The Elder Scrolls 6. Because things have been quiet since it was revealed in 2018, and it sounds like it'll stay that way for a while.
If you're looking for someone to blame, it might be Bethesda fans themselves. According to Todd Howards, the studio doesn't seem to be in any rush to release The Elder Scrolls 6, at least not while people are still engaging with Fallout and Skyrim, the Elder Scrolls title.
When it comes to ports, there's one game that gives Skyrim a run for its money.
Skyrim launched on Nintendo Switch 2 last week, and another video game legend will soon follow.
Of course, it doesn't help that Bethesda is constantly re-releasing Skyrim.
In a roundtable interview with GamesRadar, Howard spoke extensively about the situation in which The Elder Scrolls 6 appears to be left behind, much to the dismay of gamers.
Speaking about the time it took to release TES 6 compared to other titles, Howard also pointed out the popularity of those other titles.
“We also have the advantage of having millions of people playing our other games, so we're actually trying to find ways to serve other audiences while creating new games,” Howard said.
This popularity has led the team to revisit previous projects, including Starfield, for example. Bethesda hasn't seen a significant increase in staff numbers, especially compared to other developers. Among other things, Bethesda has a longer pre-production cycle before the studio completes development.
“We want to get a good kernel of ready games and start moving faster by getting more people involved,” he said.
So are Skryim players ultimately to blame? Just a little bit, along with many other competing factors.
