Where should I start with the KOTOR remake? It was announced about five years ago with a short cinematic teaser. And that's it. No, seriously, I haven't heard anything since then other than the fact that the developer has changed.
Now we are once again convinced that a KOTOR remake exists and is in active development. This time, the second developer leading the project, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer, offered reassurance.
Saber claims the KOTOR remake is still in the works and can't say more than that.
This comes from an interview with IGN in which Saber Interactive's CCO Tim Willits was asked to provide some sort of update on the ill-fated project. If you want specific details, don't hold your breath.
“Yes, it’s still in development. That’s all I can say,” he told IGN. No, we don't get much more than that. It's still there and for now that's all we get.
What's interesting is that this is a line we've been hearing non-stop since the 2021 remake was announced. Every time fans are concerned or someone remotely close to the project is interviewed, we hear that the KOTOR remake is still in development. Sometimes the person being asked the question gets frustrated that they are being asked about it at all. Don't you hate it when people keep making it clear they want to give you money when you have the right to make one of the most popular remakes of all time? That sounds terrible.
Honestly, at this point, KOTOR might be one of the most messed up series overall. The original game is a BioWare classic, considered one of the best games of all time. There was a sequel (which I think is much better), but new developer Obsidian rushed it out. KOTOR 3 never happened, but at least there was an MMO. Aside from that, the original has been ported a few times, including the Switch port of KOTOR 2, which was supposed to add cut content as DLC, but then canceled it and then faced a lawsuit from fans.
Last year's report supported the claim that a KOTOR remake was in the works, but expanded on this to claim that KOTOR 2 would also be getting a remake. But even if this is accurate, we shouldn't expect to see anything anytime soon.
