Cursed tools are powerful tools in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. A weapon infused with cursed energy, allowing the user to fight cursed spirits even without cursed energy. How much of an impact has Split Soul Katana had on the series so far?
What is a Split Soul Katana?
The Split Soul Katana is a powerful cursed tool used by Toji Fushiguro and Genin Maki. As the name suggests, the katana allows the user to cut directly into someone's soul while ignoring physical resistance. It was first introduced in Season 2, Episode 3 of the anime. This is where Toji used it against Geto and Gojo.
Toji also used the katana to cut down the Rainbow Dragon, which was considered one of Geto's most powerful curses at the time. After Toji's death, Katana's whereabouts have not been confirmed. But perhaps it was stored in the genin clan's weapons warehouse.
Maki's katana is different from Toji's katana
In Season 3, Episode 4, Maki visits the Genin clan's secret weapons warehouse. However, upon arrival, she meets her father, who tells her that he has already emptied the warehouse, making it impossible for Maki to get his hands on the original Split Soul Katana. After their father's attack, Maki and Mai are left to die. Mai, realizing the situation, uses cursed technology to create a replica of the Split Soul Katana and sacrifices her life in return.
Maki goes on to use the Split Soul Katana along with Kumiya Juzo's masterpiece “Dragon Bone” to put an end to the Zenin Clan. She not only splits her father's head in one blow, but also defeats an entire Kukuru unit.
Is Maki's newfound strength due to the Split Soul Katana?
While it is true that the Split Soul Katana greatly enhanced Maki's fighting abilities, this is not the only reason why Maki's strength is enhanced. Mai's death removed all of the cursed energy shared between the twins. In return, Maki's physically strong body was further enhanced compared to Toji.
The following section contains spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
What happens to Split Soul Katana?
Maki will continue to use the katana in Culling Game. In particular, she will use it against Naoya's cursed soul during an event held at Sakurajima Colony. At first, Maki struggles to inflict any serious damage on Naoya as she is unable to use her Katana to its full potential. Just then, Daido Hagane, who was desperately looking for a katana, appears. He immediately wields the Split Soul Katana, capable of slashing Naoya with his sheer skill alone.
Upon Maki's return from training with Miyo Rokujushi, she was finally able to wield a katana proficiently and was able to kill Naoya with ease. The Katana also has great sentimental value in the series as it serves as the final communication channel between Maki and Mai.
