South Australia measles warning: Adelaide baby infected after overseas travel

Health authorities have issued an urgent warning after a one-year-old boy in Adelaide was diagnosed with measles.

The one-year-old had just returned from overseas with his family and is currently recovering in hospital in a stable condition.

Health authorities in South Australia were informed about the infected child who had entered the state by plane from Sydney.

The child had previously been in Dubai and flew into the country on June 11 on flight EK416 to Sydney.

From there, the boy and his family travelled on flight QF749 from Sydney to Adelaide on the same day.

He was at Adelaide Airport on 11 June before attending the SA Pathology and Benson Radiology clinic at Modbury Hospital on 13 June and surgery at Salisbury Downs on 14 June.

On June 15, the boy also visited the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“SA Health advises anyone who is not fully immunized, and particularly those who were at the locations during the times listed below, to monitor for symptoms over the next few weeks and seek medical attention if ill,” SA Health said in a statement.

Because the disease is highly contagious, authorities advise anyone who is not fully immunized to watch for symptoms in the coming weeks.

SA Health has published a list of exposure sites:

  • Emergency room of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, on Saturday, June 15th from 1.45 a.m. to 3.20 a.m.
  • Premium Care Medical Practice, Shop 105B Hollywood Plaza, Salisbury Downs, on Wednesday, June 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. and Friday, June 14 from 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Benson Radiology at Modbury Hospital, on Thursday 13 June from 2pm to 3.15pm
  • SA Pathology, at Modbury Hospital, on Thursday 13 June from 3pm to 4pm

WHAT ARE MEASLES?

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that infects the respiratory tract and later spreads throughout the body.

Symptoms include cough, high fever, runny nose and a widespread rash all over the body.

The disease can affect anyone, but is most common in children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent infection or infecting others.

Before the introduction of the measles vaccination in 1963, major epidemics occurred approximately every two to three years, killing an estimated 2.6 million people each year.

This is the sixth recorded case of the disease in South Africa this year. Only three cases were recorded last year. Officials say most cases of measles in Australia occur in visitors from abroad or returning travellers who have not received two doses of the vaccine.
