Hollow Knight: Silksong has the inevitable task of keeping up the hype after keeping fans waiting for so long. To a lesser extent, it's the same dilemma GTA 6 and Half-Life 3 will face when they finally release. However, as Silk Song received positive reviews from both fans and critics, it seems that the Cherry team made good use of the time.
Developers may be happy with the overall results, but winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025 is a whole different conversation. We've had quite a few bangers this year, but the way things are going, I don't think even the GOTY nominees have any other choice than Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In fact, Team Cherry is so confident about this that they won't attend the awards ceremony at all.
Team Cherry won't be attending The Game Awards 2025 because Expedition 33 won everything anyway.
Along with Hades 2, Death Stranding 2, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Silksong has been nominated for Game of the Year 2025, but the developers see no reason to attend. They are confident that Expedition 33 will win. Aside from that, it looks like there's still more Silksong content to work on.
When Bloomberg asked Team Cherry co-founder William Pellen if he would be in LA for the event, his response was a nonchalant, “Probably not. We're pretty busy.” When asked what he would have done if Silksong had recorded his acceptance speech if he won, Pellen added that the result was a foregone conclusion and that Expedition 33 would certainly accept it.
I don't think there's a definite GOTY for 2025 and that's a good thing
“But Expedition 33!” I know, I hear you.
“I think it’s safe this year, I think it’s Expedition 33,” he said. “It's exceptional and broadly palatable. On the other hand, we're on a knife's edge that appeals to some people and offends others.” In fact, the difficulty level of Silksong may be somewhat unpleasant for casual players. Expedition 33 isn't a walk in the park either, but it's not nearly as difficult as Team Cherry's game.
To be honest, it would be a huge surprise to everyone if the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 didn't win. Maybe Team Cherry has the right idea here.
