Silent Hill fans are turning their PS1 classic into a VR game.

Horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space are terrifying in their own right, and there are moments when you want to run away screaming and throw your controller against the wall. Then, with the advent of virtual reality (VR), horror games that were already difficult to handle became even more frightening.

Not every horror title known to mankind has made the transition to VR, but one fan is helping one of the most iconic titles, the PlayStation 1's original Silent Hill, work properly.

What are the results? Silent Hill (1999) VR Edition will be released soon by VRified Games. He is a self-described “VR enthusiast who loves playing flat screen games in VR.”

In a nearly two-minute video shared on YouTube, they emphasized that their project is neither a “fan remake” nor a “port”, but rather an experiment in taking the original title and making it fully playable in first-person stereoscopic 3D with improved head tracking and modernized controls.

This project doesn't have a release date other than 'soon'. Fans are encouraged to subscribe to his YouTube channel for the latest updates, which include a look at how it might work in real life.

While Resident Evil received the modern VR treatment, Silent Hill and its renaissance did not. This seems to have prompted the creators to take matters into their own hands.

“Yeah, I literally waited years for me to fill up Thanos and say, ‘Okay, I’ll do it myself.’” They wrote it in response to someone.

Do we really need Silent Hill?

Is there too much of a good thing?

Whatever the case, it looks like horror and VR fans will have another title to add to their lists. Think about it. This isn't the only Silent Hill-related thing in the works, either officially or unofficially.

Silent Hill fans are having a blast, and it doesn't look like things are going to stop anytime soon.

To recap, the Silent Hill 2 remake is out in 2024, and while there were some initial fears, the team at Bloober nailed it and helped bring the horror classic to modern hardware.

A year later, Silent Hill f, the first new Silent Hill project in years, was released to critical acclaim, and a series of Silent Hill games followed. Meanwhile, the Bloober team was chosen to remake the original Silent Hill title and add a third game to the book.

Most recently, Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamato shared his hope that the team can release a new Silent Hill game every year now that the franchise is back on track. It's a bold statement, but with two hits under their belts, who can stop them?

If all of this isn't enough, there's also a live-action film, Return to Silent Hill, scheduled for release later this month. It may not sound particularly incredible, but we're willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Adding VR titles is really just another cherry on top of a full-fledged resurgence.
