It's especially heartbreaking when he tells Judith that his mother, Lori, told him he would “beat this world.” He tells her he can't do it, but he knows she will. In particular, this episode is even more difficult for viewers who have been watching since season 1 because they can see Karl's growth right before their eyes, and it is very difficult to let him go after seeing him mature as a young man.
