Rugby World Cup 2023: Scottish rugby fan wins over world in all-time interview, Ireland, South Africa, Wallabies, reaction

A Scottish rugby fan has gone viral for one of the great vox-pop interviews of all-time, despite Scotland being dumped out of the World Cup.

World No. 1 ranked Ireland defeated Scotland 36-14 and after earlier losing to World No. 3 South Africa, the World No. 5 followed the Wallabies’ suit and were sent packing in what was dubbed the “group of death”.

But while the nation was bundled out of the World Cup in the group stages, one Scottish fan has gone viral after chatting with talkSPORT outside the stadium.

“Thing is about tonight — and we’re not mucking about here — we’ve given it absolutely laldy (beating) in there tonight, no mucking about,” he began.

“We’ve given it our best shot, we came up short. That’s what it’s about, we came up short, over committing the midfield. Too many spaces round the corners.

“But we over committed. See if we hadn’t taken the points early on, we’d have chased that scoreboard down and they wouldn’t have ran away with it. There’s no way they’d have ran away with it. No way.

“Thank you, thank you for talking to me.”

But just as he’s about to walk away, the interviewer realises what a good thing he’s onto and asks what he thought about Ireland.

“Ireland? They’re a handy team,” he began as another man ran in screaming.

“Ireland a handy team alright. They know how to flick it about. They can flick the pill, they can flick the pill, any day of the week they’ll flick the pill. And they’ll punish you. They’ll get in the corners and they’ll punish you.

“I love Ireland, they’re a great team to watch. It’s a blizzard when they’re out there. Firing the pill, they’re in the corners — it’s a blizzard.”

When asked if he wanted to say anything to World Rugby, he probably said the least surprising part of the interview, when he said he’d been on the drink.

“I want to say World Rugby — I’ve been on the lash for five weeks like, you know?” he said.

“I started with a wee golf tournament down in Vilamoura and that was magic. And then I jumped over to Marseilles and I couldn’t believe it when I go there because they were filling us with the old bevvy.

“And we just went on the lash for four weeks, went up through the Chablis, down the wine cellars, had a brilliant time, a brilliant time.”

He then adds: “Win lose or draw, I’m getting p**sed. Win lose or draw, I’m getting blootered, big yin!”

When the interviewer asked whether that was the secret for any disappointed Scots out there, he added: “We don’t care if we win, lose or draw, what the hell do we care?

“We only know there’s going to be a show and the bonny Scotland will be there!”

The interview has been seen on X, formerly known as Twitter, 7.2m times at time of writing.

Irish TV presenter Daniel Hussey tweeted: “This is so good. Scottish rugby fan after Ireland defeat. Takes it like a true champ.”

Another fan wrote: “World needs more characters like this.”

Another posted: “The winner of the internet over the weekend.”

It was also described as “the best rugby interview ever.”

The tournament is into the knockout stages of the tournament with big matches lined up for the quarterfinals.

Wales will face Argentina, while World No. 1 Ireland will take on World No. 2 New Zealand on Sunday Australian time.

England play Fiji and France take on South Africa in the other quarterfinals.
