Pokemon Winds and Waves was officially revealed earlier today, giving us a gorgeous tropical environment to explore when it releases in 2027. At the same time, they also revealed the game's three starters: Growt, Pombon, and Gecqua. I've only known Pombon for a few hours, but I'd be down if something happened to him.
I have no fears that Pombon will have a terrible life or be kicked out early, but something that not only has a history of happening in Pokemon games, but happens often, could happen to him. Yes, I, along with many other Pokemon fans, really hope Game Freak keeps Pombon on four legs and doesn't make the poor little guy walk on two legs for his evolution.
Please game freak, don't lift your pom bon foot.
We've seen Game Freak lift animals off the ground several times in the past. One of the most recent examples is Sprigatito from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The starter looks adorable, but Game Freak made it bipedal in its second evolution. This also happened to Litten in Pokemon Sun and Moon, where Litten ended up falling off his feet and turning into Incineroar, a pseudo-wrestler. The same goes for Cyndaquil, Fennekin, and Tepig. When it comes to starters based on adorable animals, Game Freak will excel at this.
Unsurprisingly, it's become a tired and somewhat annoying evolution trend that many people want to find frustrating in Pokemon Wind and Waves. In a Reddit post on the Pokemon subreddit showing off the game's starter, almost everyone on Team Pombon is keeping their fingers crossed and keeping all four paws on the ground when it evolves, with one user named Recursion8 simply saying, “Let it be on all fours. Let it be on all fours.”
The same goes for Twitter. One user named LenVGC continues to chant “NO LEVANTES LAS PATAS,” which translates to “DONT LIFT YOUR PAWS.” Some have already given up and automatically assume that Pombon will turn into a buffed bipedal Fire/Fighting type dog with six packs like Emboar and Blaziken.
But there is hope among Pokemon fans. Many suspect that Gecqua will be a more bipedal Pokémon, while others believe Game Freak should let Pombon get dumber as it evolves and eventually become a full-fledged Fire-type Samoyed. That would undoubtedly be the best outcome. Because Pombone is too adorable to be a jacking wrestler right now. Let him keep it as a 4-foot Game Freak. Otherwise the Pombon army will break down your door.
Unfortunately, it seems like waiting for a long time for more information about Pokemon Wind and Wave will be tough. This means that the final evolution of the three starters will be a mystery for now. I would be surprised if the game was released outside of the holiday season. So, we can expect the game's release to be still more than a year away. That gives Game Freak more time to cook, so hopefully Wind and Waves can stop the recent trend of weird Pokemon releases.
