Pokemon Champions is finally here and brings some very interesting new abilities to all the new Mega Evolutions recently added to the Pokemon Legends: ZA series. Most are pretty tame, but some of the new Mega Evolutions like Mega Meganium and Mega Floette have proven to be game-changing.
However, there is one Mega Evolution that will send shivers down your spine and completely destroy your team if you are not prepared: Mega Hawlucha. While not a major damage dealer per se, Pokemon Champions players have already found a way for this 'mon to form a truly scary OHKO team in just one turn.
Watch out for Mega Hawlucha in Pokemon Champions. It's destroying the team.
For those who don't know, Pokemon Champions gave Mega Hawlucha an ability called No Guard. This essentially makes any move the Pokemon uses land without fail, unless hindered by a status ailment. It's not particularly useful in Hawlucha, but unfortunately Hawlucha still has a skill called Entrainment.
Entrainment is a skill that gives the target Pokémon the same abilities as the attacker. For example, if Mega Hawlucha uses Entrainment on Vanilluxe or Excadrill, those two Pokémon will overwrite the ability and get No Guard instead. Pokemon veterans, you probably already know what's coming.
Vanilluxe and Excadrill can use the One-Hit KO (OHKO) moves, Sheer Cold and Horn Drill, respectively. These moves can kill a Pokémon in one hit regardless of stat drops, but the accuracy is too low to compensate for this. However, if these Pokemon don't have a guard, they will attack regardless of accuracy.
Now, as you can imagine, Pokemon Champions players are already using this strategy to sweep their teams. Things like using Entrainment with Mega Hawlucha on the first turn and instantly giving your Vanilluxe or Excadrill partner a guaranteed OHKO move. What makes matters worse is that Vanilluxe and Excadrill are also fairly fast Pokemon, so you have very few options to deal with this strategy.
Of course, there are things you can do. For example, you could run a Pokemon with a taunt to disable Mega Hawlucha's Entrainment access, or run a Pokemon faster than Vanilluxe or Excadrill and try to get it out of the picture before it becomes an unstoppable killing machine.
If you're facing off against Vanilluxe, you might want to run an Ice-type Pokemon since Sheer Cold won't affect it, but Mega Hawlucha may have a type disadvantage since it has access to powerful Fighting-type moves. There are several ways to do this, but you need to recognize when someone is trying to attack you with an OHKO strategy.
To be honest, it's a bit of a problem, and I can see Mega Hawlucha possibly losing access to Entrainment if the developers feel it's too out-of-strategy to allow for in the current game. Anyway, this is a warning, so if you come across an opponent running Mega Hawlucha with Vanilluxe, Excadrill, or any other Pokemon that has access to the OHKO move, take them out immediately.
