Violent crime is not common in Japan, but unfortunately the gaming industry has been hit hard by past threats and actual violence. For example, in 2024, Nintendo canceled an event due to threats of violence against employees and attendees, and in the past individual developers have received verbal abuse and death threats, forcing developers to issue public statements calling for an end to harassment.

Pokemon center employee dies after being attacked while working
In Japan, around 7 p.m. on March 26, 110 (equivalent to 911 in the United States) began receiving reports that a man with a knife was causing trouble at a shopping center in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan. Although initial reports make it sound like the attack targeted the entire shopping center, the crime did not actually occur outside of the Pokémon Center. According to eyewitness accounts and surveillance video, a man who appeared to be in his 20s entered the Pokemon Center in the Sunshine City building holding two knives. He went straight to the counter, where a female employee in her 20s was standing there working. He allegedly approached her and then stabbed her in the neck with one of the knives. After the attack on her, he turned one of the knives on himself. Both people were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but neither survived the accident.
It is unclear at this time what the motive for the attack was, and police have not released information about whether the two men knew each other. No names or additional information about who the individual is has been shared at this time. However, despite the general panic indicated by the emergency call, the attacker did not make any moves towards the store or anyone else nearby, making this appear to be a deliberately targeted attack. It is expected that more information will be released in the future. Meanwhile, the Ikebukuro Pokémon Center itself issued an official press release, stating that it would be temporarily closing its store to facilitate the ongoing investigation, as well as ensure the mental health of its employees. There is no word yet on when the store will reopen, so fans should stay tuned for further updates.
You can imagine that this must have been an extremely scary experience for everyone involved. Most students in Japan are currently on spring break, so it's likely there were children in the store when the attack occurred. The store will open as soon as possible, but the impact of this experience may last for those who were there at the time of the attack.
It is highly unlikely that the attack was triggered by any factor related to: pokemon Unfortunately, this isn't the first time violent crimes have occurred surrounding the series.
