Number 7 Luffy almost died in one piece (but survived because of the plot armor)

protagonist of one pieceMonkey D. Luffy is currently one of the most powerful pirates on the seas. At the end of the story, Luffy stands tall as one of the Four Emperors of the Sea and has a power that no one else in the story can match. But Luffy wasn't always as strong as he is now. When he began his journey from East Blue he was quite weak and often came close to death throughout the journey.

In fact, Luffy almost died. one piece Many times, and without the plot armor he gained from being the main character, he would certainly have faced his inevitable death. Here's when Luffy only survives in One Piece because of his pubic armor:

One Piece: 7 Issues Coming After Elbaf

Elbaf is great, but a bigger arc follows in One Piece.

When Luffy fought Arlong

Along Luffy One Piece I almost died

Luffy's fight with Arlong was rather easy for him, but his goofy nature often overwhelms him during battles, which can lead him to make some very bad decisions. For example, when Luffy decided to deliver the fatal blow to Muumu the manatee, he was left stuck with his feet planted on the ground. It was a golden opportunity for Arlong to kill Luffy..

Instead of just dealing a fatal blow to Luffy, Arlong decided to throw Luffy into the water, which was a relatively passive way to kill his enemy. If Arlong had delivered the fatal blow to Luffy when he had nothing to defend himself with, the arc would have ended and Luffy would have easily died.

When Luffy fought a crocodile

Luffy's fight with Crocodile brought him close to death on several occasions. This is probably the battle where he made the most use of his protagonist's plot armor. When Luffy and Crocodile first fought, he showed no response to Logia's abilities, and was stabbed in the gut by Shichibukai and left in the desert to die. Luffy was saved by Nico Robin and miraculously recovered by eating meat.

Not long after, Luffy fought Crocodile again, and this time, Luffy was defeated miserably as he absorbed all the water in Crocodile's body and became smaller. Fortunately, the water he shot at the crocodile ended up falling on it, giving it new life. Luffy later survives Crocodile's poisoning and should have lost his life, but once again his pubic armor comes to the rescue.

When Luffy fought Rob Lucci

One Piece Rob Lucci Luffy Almost Died

Luffy's fight against Rob Lucci tested him to his absolute limit.. To compete on equal footing with Luffy, Luffy had to rely on the power of Gear 2 and Gear 3, but these abilities were too expendable for him to utilize. Given that Rob Lucci is a powerhouse in close combat, Luffy had to put all his energy into matching him in battle.

However, that proves to be not enough, especially when hit by the maximum radius Rokuogan. Normally, Luffy would have just died here, but because Usopp spoke to him, Luffy got back up and delivered the final blow to Rob Lucci. Again, under normal circumstances Luffy would probably have died here.

When Luffy was poisoned by Magellan

Magellan Luffy's one piece that almost killed him

In Impel Down Ark Luffy almost died when he fought Magellan.. Despite all the power he had, Luffy couldn't even scratch the government warden's stronghold. The only attack he made on Magellan left him severely poisoned and he was soon dealt with. Magellan's body contained so many toxins that no one could have been poisoned from him and survived.

One Piece Loki Plot Hole Devil Fruit Story

One Piece's new Loki reveal creates a plot hole that completely ruins the Devil Fruit story

The Devil Fruit story in One Piece was ruined by the new storyline that Oda introduced in Elbaf.

However, Luffy actually survived for quite some time until Ivankov administered treatment to him. Even when Ivankov provided him with medical treatment, there was little chance he would survive, but he managed to work a miracle that came from the protagonist's plot armor.

When Luffy was defeated by an angry army

Big Mom Pirates Fury Army Luffy Almost Dies One Piece

On the Whole Cake Island one piece, Luffy suffers another crushing defeat from Big Mom's angry army.. This happened right after he defeated Cracker and was defeated by Sanji. Luffy was left for dead against the enraged army and they could have easily finished him off if they wanted to.

  • Luffy completely faints during this battle and is imprisoned in Montdor's Book Prison. Instead of dying, Luffy is allowed to live just because he is the main character, which is a very clever use of plot armor.

When Luffy loses to Kaido in Kuri

Kaidokuri Luffy Almost Dies One Piece

Luffy fought Kaido several times throughout the Wano Country arc, but perhaps the most one-sided battle they fought occurred in Kuri at the very beginning of the arc. After seeing Kaido attack his comrades, Luffy jumped into battle with the Yonko and tried his luck at him by unleashing the fierce power of Gear 4. Luffy thought he would make some progress in the fight, but it was to no avail as Kaido knocked him down with one swing of his club.

This depicts the difference between Yonko and Luffy.. Kaido did not kill Captain Straw Hat despite completely defeating him. Instead, he threw him into a prisoner's mine to break his spirit. If Kaido had shown his true ruthless nature here, and if Luffy hadn't been the main character, he probably would have died.

When Luffy's heart stopped fighting Kaido

Kaido Luffy's one piece that almost killed him

Luffy faced near death more than once against Kaido. And before the final battle begins, Kaido actually succeeds in killing Luffy. When Kaido hit Luffy with the Horai Hakke, the blow was so strong that it stopped Luffy's heart. In fact, the entire Onigashima could no longer hear his voice, confirming that he was indeed dead.

Just before he died completely, Luffy's Devil Fruit awakened and imbued him with new energy. This allowed Luffy to harness the power of Gear 5, which was ultimately the reason he was able to defeat Kaido. If it weren't for this incredibly convenient Devil Fruit awakening, Luffy would probably be dead here. Luffy later became one of the Four Emperors of the Sea, and in the Final Saga, he became even stronger than before. Ultimately, Luffy risked his life and threw himself into near-death situations to get to this point. That's the essence of his character, and something fans tend to enjoy, too.
