At this point, nothing Nintendo does will surprise anyone. That is unless they finally decide to translate Mother 3. Otherwise, whatever decision Nintendo makes will have to be par for the course.
But that doesn't mean you can't roast them for doing the weirdest things. Because that's exactly what happened with the recent Nintendo Switch 2 firmware update.
The Nintendo Switch 2's new boost mode finally makes it a console worth buying.
Playing in handheld mode on Nintendo Switch 2 is better than ever thanks to the new Boost Mode.
As first discovered by GoNintendo, firmware update 22.0.0, released last month, includes a small change that only the most die-hard Nintendo fans will notice: Mario's avatar icon has changed slightly.
Someone at Nintendo wasn't too happy with the way Mario looked, so things had to change.
Wait a minute?
Okay, let me explain.
There are some differences in the Mario and Luigi icons between Nintendo Switch 2 consoles running on firmware 21.2.0 and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles running on firmware 22.0.0. What is the difference? Some artifacts around the edges were removed, but it was not possible to distinguish between the two sets.
Here are the changes along with some repositioning to make the icons a bit more centered.
It's worth noting that the update isn't entirely focused on improving Mario's icons. The update includes the ability to create and save notes about people on your friends list, the ability to fast forward and rewind videos in the news or the eShop, and more.
But the biggest one may be a “boost mode” for the portable device, which will dramatically improve original Nintendo Switch titles running on the Switch 2.
Essentially, this allows portable players to get the same experience limited to the Switch in “docked” mode, including 1080p resolution. As a result, infamous titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are now actually tolerable on the go.
“Iconic characters that were once a blurry mess on the original console screen are now much clearer, with aggressive aliasing smoothed out thanks to resolution three times higher than before,” wrote Jade King of TheGamer in her piece.
That was probably the most important thing for most fans. But apparently Nintendo had other goals as well, including making sure Mario was as centered as possible.
