Miyamoto says Mario movies exist because the games don't reach everyone.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie may not have been as well-received as its predecessor, but box office prospects are already looking good. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the fact that there are two post-credits scenes leads me to believe that Nintendo and Illumination may have more planned. Aside from making tons of money, there seems to be another reason to push this movie.

Shigeru Miyamoto was deeply involved in the production of this film. In addition to making sure Nintendo assets are properly displayed, he's there to ensure the company's beloved mascot appeals to a wider audience. This is quite a bit of a liability to the movie, especially since Miyamoto thinks there's only so much the game can do.

In an interview with Polygon, he noted that younger audiences will now relate to the movie version of Mario rather than the games. He revealed that Mario has always evolved with the medium and that this film series is just the next version. There's no doubt about the game's popularity, but it can't reach everyone.

“When we talk about Mario as a character, he has always evolved with the evolution of digital media,” he said. “As we approached Mario and developed the Mario games, we started to feel that there were so many people that could be reached through Nintendo's systems and consoles. Now, with technologies like digital streaming and the scope that technology allows, we think this is a great way to get Mario involved as well and really evolve with digital media.”

He added that previously the only way to interact with Nintendo properties was through Nintendo consoles and games. However, by extending the IP to movies, toys, etc., people can interact with the IP through a variety of mediums.

“So instead of people thinking, ‘What kind of games will Nintendo put out now?’” Miyamoto said, he hopes people will think “what kind of world Nintendo will be unfolding now.”
