There's been a lot of talk about Microsoft's new strategy for Xbox. Phil Spencer and the gang have been pushing an 'everything is Xbox' approach, but fans, rivals and even former employees think this isn't the right direction. There were also questions about Xbox's console gaming commitments, which the company had to sort out.
After the hugely expensive ROG Xbox Ally and Game Pass price increases, it's anyone's guess what the company has in store for the long term. To make things clear, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has spoken out about this approach, saying that Xbox wants to be a publisher that exists across all platforms, like Microsoft Office.
Microsoft wants Xbox to be everywhere.
Nadella spoke with TBPM through game files to understand how top executives want Xbox's approach to evolve in the future. “We want to be a visionary publisher, similar to the approach we took at Office,” he said. “We're going to be everywhere, on every platform. We want to make sure that whether it's console, PC, mobile, cloud gaming or TV, we want to make sure gamers everywhere can enjoy their games.”
He continued the conversation by saying that Xbox wants to innovate not only in the console market, but also in PC gaming. While both are important, Nadella emphasized that the console is what drives the industry and pushes the envelope in terms of innovation. But the company is also looking to new forms of media.
Then again, Xbox President of Game Content and Studios Matt Booty thought so too. That means its competition isn't other gaming companies like Sony, but short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Comparing the gaming business to office tools is a sea change, even for Microsoft. While Word, Excel, and the like come pre-built on your PC and are a necessity in most office environments, gaming software is a luxury that not everyone wants or needs to interact with.
