An item to be held by a Pokemon. A light and sharp claw. The holder may be able to strike first. (Recommended for Scyther, Gengar, and Sneasel.) |
Before coming across Mewtwo, players are recommended to bring several types of items. Max Repel is an exploration item and a must-have for limiting Wild Pokemon encounters, especially when exploring the Cerulean Cave tunnels and pathways.
Meanwhile, Max Restore and Max Revive ensure that Tyranitar, Gengar, Scizor, and Parasect can continue to engage Mewtwo in a battle at full strength. As for Max Ether, this PP recovery item helps in maintaining their strong Pokemon moves available when facing the legendary Pokemon.
Although optional, Held Items are essential for key battles, such as catching rare and legendary Pokemon. Leftovers sustain the HP levels of Misdreavus, Tyranitar, and Parasect, whereas Quick Claws increases the likelihood of Scyther, Gengar, and Sneasel taking their turn first in battle.
Raise Pokemon Levels to 70 or above
Before attempting to capture Mewtwo, players must raise their Pokemon’s level to roughly 70 or above. This ensures their survival against the legendary Psychic Pokemon’s Psychic attacks.

How to Capture Mewtwo in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
Once your Pokemon team is ready and supplies prepared, face Mewtwo in its lair in Cerulean Cave B2F. To catch Mewtwo successfully in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, follow these steps carefully:
- Save your game before facing Mewtwo.
- Reduce the HP levels of Mewtwo to red.
- Use Status moves or effects to hinder Mewtwo.
- Throw the Ultra Balls at Mewtwo to capture it.
Mewtwo can be caught early in the first turn using a Master Ball, especially if it is Shiny Mewtwo. However, if players want a challenge or want to save the Master Ball for another legendary Pokemon, continue reading our guide below:
Save Your Game Before Facing Mewtwo
As mentioned before, players should save their progress before engaging Mewtwo. Saving before the Super boss encounter allows players to fix mistakes in team build, execution, missing items, or having a Pokemon faint.
Lower the HP of Mewtwo to Red
Begin the battle with Scyther or Scizor’s Fury Cutter or Tyranitar’s Crunch moves to deal STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) damage to Mewtwo. Then, switch to Hunter, Gengar, Misdreavus, or Sneasel to deliver chip damage on the Genetic Pokemon.
If Mewtwo uses its Recover move, players can switch back to Scyther, Scizor, or Tyranitar to do massive damage while not fainting the legendary Pokemon.
Use Status Moves to Hinder Mewtwo
Switch to Hunter, Gengar, Misdreavus, Sneasel, or Parasect to inflict Mewtwo with a Status Condition. To impair the Legendary Pokemon, use Status moves like Sludge Bomb for Poison, Confuse Ray for Confusion, Stun Spore for Paralysis, or Spore for Sleep. Mewtwo can only have one negative status at a time, and having it makes it easier to capture during battle.
If Mewtwo uses its Safeguard move, turn back to dealing damage without knocking down the Genetic Pokemon. Safeguard’s effect lasts five turns.
Throw Ultra Balls at Mewtwo until it is Captured
Catch Mewtwo successfully with a Master Ball. If players are reserving it for other legendary Pokemon, they can utilize Ultra Balls instead.
The Master Ball is earned by rescuing the president of Silph Co. and beating Giovanni in Saffron City. Meanwhile, Ultra Balls can be obtained through pick-up in various Kanto areas or by purchase at Poke Mart branches in Fuchsia City, Cinnabar Island, Indigo Plateau, and Sevii Islands.
How to Hunt Shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
Mewtwo, like other legendary Pokemon, is not Shiny locked. To encounter the green-colored variation of the Genetic Pokemon, carefully follow these instructions:
- Save your progress at Mewtwo’s lair at Cerulean Cave B2F.
- Start the battle with Mewtwo to see if it is shiny or not.
- If not, do a Soft Reset by pressing A, B, X, and Y simultaneously to return to the title screen.
- Reload your saved file and attempt to capture Shiny Mewtwo again.
Since the Shiny Charm is not yet implemented in Generation 3, players can only acquire Shiny Mewtwo by chance in battle.
