Reese Witherspoon has announced a prequel series to the cult classic film Legally Blonde is officially happening.

The US actress, 48, brought Elle Woods to the big screen in the iconic 2001 movie, which has forged an enduring legacy as one of Hollywood’s greatest chick flicks.

Now, more than two decades later, the Harvard student’s ‘90s high school journey will form the subject of new series, Elle, which is being made for streaming service Amazon Prime.

Posting a nostalgic teaser video on TikTok, set to the original movie’s opening song Perfect Day, a pink-clad Witherspoon can be seen applying lipstick, reading a ‘top secret’ pink-coloured script and holding the character’s Chihuahua, Bruiser Woods.

Prequel announced for cult 2000s film

Witherspoon is then seen fronting Amazon’s first-ever upfront presentation to announce the commission of Elle. Of course, she threw a ‘bend and snap’ manoeuvre in for good measure.

“Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl,” Witherspoon wrote alongside the clip.

“And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on @primevideo. I’M SO EXCITED.”

Witherspoon will executive produce the series through her Hello Sunshine media company, while series creator Laura Kittrell will serve as showrunner and co-executive producer.

There’s no word yet on who will portray a teen Elle, but users in the comment section speculated Witherspoon’s lookalike daughter Ava Phillippe, 24, would be the perfect choice.

“Her daughter needs to play young Elle Woods!,” one wrote.

“I hope Ava is playing Elle,” another added.

“[Young Elle] Has to be Ava surely,” a third chimed in.

Further teasing what fans can expect from the show, Witherspoon added, “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do.

“What could be better than that? I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine — along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell — for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

Meanwhile, a third Legally Blonde movie has been in talks for the last five years, though production appears to have stalled.

Witherspoon confirmed via Twitter in 2018 that rumours of a third film were “true”, and in 2020, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were reported to be working on a script.

However, there’s no official word yet on if it’s still in the works.
