Some characters don't just live in my favorite games. They move in, unpack, and take up permanent residence in my head without paying rent. Baldur's Gate 3's peers are a masterclass in performance, character design, and narrative execution. As a contributor to Game Rant, I've often praised it. I used my questions to rate each character individually and then averaged the scores. I'm saying this to justify Baldur's Gate 3Wyll ranks last behind me, despite being my personal second favorite companion. Wyll doesn't rank this low because of his lack of strong moments. He's cunning, resourceful, and kind on the beats the party needs him to be. But he outperformed his peers in almost every category.

What hurt Wyll's ranking the most was that he received the lowest score in his character arc. Being the character with the least content in the game, this naturally hurt his overall ranking. But that doesn't mean Blade of Frontiers didn't have its moments to shine. Unfortunately, other characters shined brighter.

gale

Gail is an interesting companion to me. Some players can't stand his ramblings, but I've always found it endearing, even if it's a bit generous. He is serious to a fault, prefers grand gestures in romance, and is deeply aware of his own brilliance. That self-awareness is both his charm and his undoing. I especially regretted hiring Gale in the first place. Baldur's Gate 3 Because I was also playing a spellcaster. Doubling up on a wizard felt redundant, and it took a few playthroughs and a variety of classes before I could appreciate his combat potential on its own. Once it clicked, Gale became a dependable and flexible presence in my party.

Where Gale ultimately loses ground is in narrative momentum. His arc is conceptually compelling—arrogance, devotion, and self-annihilation intertwined—but it often feels like a messy resolution. His romances are tender and sincere but relatively understated, and while their connections to the main plot are important, they never fully overwhelm the gravity of his personal crisis. Gail has the narrative DNA of a protagonist. Baldur's Gate 3: Thoughtful, tragic and beautifully written. But he was pushed out by colleagues who demanded more space and talked about taking more risks.

Shadow Heart

Fun fact about this ranking: Shadowheart and Karlach are actually tied for third place! So, in alphabetical order, I'll give Shadowheart 4th place. It also feels appropriate for a character who spends much of the game deliberately holding himself back.

Shadowheart's strength lies in self-control. Her arc is slow and deliberate, layered with uncertainty, and that patience pays off in a way that feels deeply intentional. She is integral to the main plot in an explicit and thematic way, and her internal conflict is a mirror. Baldur's Gate 3and broader concerns about faith, autonomy, and survival under a system that demands obedience.

That said, Shadowheart's combat role is… she's a solid healer, but she's disappointingly missing out on her lack of deliberate respect. And while her romances are emotionally satisfying, they unfold at a quieter pace than the others. Her story was beautifully told, but its power was subtle rather than explosive. Shadowheart doesn't demand attention. She is slowly earning it, and for some players, these limitations may make it difficult for her to reach the highest level.

Kalach

Karlach's placement here feels almost unfair, which is probably the most Karlach thing imaginable. She's instantly lovable, narratively devastating, and mechanically powerful enough to make her feel indispensable from the moment she joins the party.

In battle, Karlach stands out. Her presence is immediate, instinctive and trustworthy, and her role is so clearly defined that she rarely feels overshadowed by the rest of her colleagues. Narratively, her arc is one of the most emotionally consistent in the game. It's painfully finite, brutally honest, and grounded in a performance that never lets you forget what's at stake.

Karlach's failure to rise higher is not due to a lack of impact but a lack of narrative agency. Karlach's story is intentionally tragic, and while that tragedy is effective, it limits the range of outcomes she can achieve. Her romances are heartfelt and moving, but they carry the weight of inevitability in ways that constrain their outcomes. Karlach is special. But her arc burns fast and bright rather than evolving over the entire scope of the game.

Astarion

Fun fact about me: I studied vampires in graduate school. That's right. Astarion got my number right away.

Astarion is one of the following: Baldur's Gate 3's most ambitious characters and their ambitions are revealed. He actively interrogates while respecting the vampire traditions of seduction, cruelty, and survival. His story is not just about liberation from abuse, but about what comes after freedom: choice, responsibility, and the absence of terrible structures.

Mechanically, the Astarion is unrivaled. His combat utility is unstoppable at higher levels, and his narrative relevance steadily deepens as the game progresses. Astarion's romance is one of the most emotionally complex in modern RPGs. He can be manipulated, softened, destroyed, or healed depending on the player's choice. Few companions respond so directly to how players engage. What ultimately keeps Astarion at the top is balance. His arc is powerful, but completely disconnected from the main issue. He is not forgotten. His story, for all its splendor, is more personal than universal.

Laezel

Lae'zel takes the top spot not because she's the most immediately likable companion, but because she's the most consistently integrated companion. From the opening moment rainGate of Aldur 3 Leading up to the final decision, Lae'zel cannot be separated from the game's core conflicts: ideological, narrative, and mechanical.

Lae'zel's character arc is one of indelible transformation. She doesn't abandon who she is. She interrogates it. Her faith, anger, and sense of purpose are all challenged, deconstructed, and reformed in rewarding and deeply satisfying ways. Few companions experience such dramatic and consistent growth. And to put it more eloquently, she is my youngest companion, which brings out in me an unknown maternal instinct to protect.

In battle, Laezel does his part, showing devastation in his canon form. BG3 A fighter with brutal clarity. Her romances are equally uncompromising. It's intense, intimate, and ultimately rooted in mutual commitment rather than emotional dependence. Lae'zel's stories are not parallel. Baldur's Gate 3Theme of; It implements them. When all criteria are evaluated together, she stands out as the most complete definition of the gaming experience.
