The main mission “Tip of the Spear” tasks you with trading with Karst, located southwest of Mother's Cradle. You can purchase a tripcaster here in exchange for a scraper lens.

The Tripcaster fires a projectile that creates a tripwire between two points selected by the player. When an enemy, robot or human, crosses the wire, the trap explodes, damaging the unfortunate soul (or chunk of metal).

Tripcasters are particularly effective against machinery due to their high damage potential. To set up an ambush, hide in the tall grass and use Focus to reveal the robot's patrol path. Then place tripwires along the path. Once the robot triggers the trap, it's time to come out of hiding and get the job done.

Initially, you only have access to the standard Tripcaster, which uses Shock Wire ammo. Eventually you'll unlock an upgraded version of Tripcaster that can also use Blast Wire and Fire Wire.
