How to Switch Characters in NieR: Automata

Nier: AutomataThe main story is divided into three playthroughs. There was some overlap in my first two playthroughs, but by the third it became clear that there was still a lot of story to be seen even after the credits first rolled.

There are three main playthroughs you'll want to complete, but there are also many endings you'll want to see, some are more specific than others, and some require you to play as specific characters and perform specific tasks. Here's a look at all three playable characters and how to switch between them.

story Nier: Automata It revolves around 2B, 9S, A2. 2B and 9S are partners, and based on how much time they spend in each playthrough, the two will arguably get the most screen time. Each character has a unique fighting style, and there are several features that can make each playthrough a new experience, even if you have the same plug-in chip equipped throughout all three playthroughs. 2B, 9S, and A2 are all playable characters. But changing who you play might not be so simple.

How to Switch Characters in NieR: Automata

Players choose which character to play as

During your first playthrough of the game, you won't be able to change your character whenever you want. Who plays on each play:

Playthrough 1 – 2B
Playthrough 2 – 9S
Playthrough 3 – 2B/9S/A2Switch between each character depending on the story.

After choosing one of the game's main endings, Chapter Select mode is unlocked, and you can now choose who you want to play as. Chapter Selection mode lets you choose one of the game's 17 chapters to return to. In many of these chapters, you'll see the numbers on the right side of the screen change depending on which side quests are completed or not. If your character has a number in that chapter, you can: Choose to play that chapter as that character.

In some later chapters, most on the third playthrough, only the following are allowed: Play specific chapters with specific charactersAnd that won't change. You can change characters at any time through chapter selection, but you must change your current location in the story to wherever that character was playable in the main story. As long as you save before moving on to another chapter, everything you did in Chapter Select mode will be retained, allowing you to level up the shared levels of all three characters as you work towards max level.
