Most priority contracts require specific objectives to be completed during a single execution. As you complete these objectives and extract them safely, your XP rewards will add up quickly, allowing you to level up faster and earn more Silk.
If you're worried that there might be other Runners around where you want to be, you can choose the Thief class and use your Pickpocket Drone to scout out the entire area and get information on if there are other players in the area. You can also steal some of the highest quality loot if you can tie down the objective.
There is only one way to obtain silk other than leveling rewards. Players who purchased deluxe upgrade receive 200 pieces of silk with access to Premium Rewards Pass. However, this is a one-time bonus, so you will not receive additional Silk from this upgrade in the future.
