After rumblings of a remaster in the works and its exciting announcement, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is finally out in the wild, and it’s an absolute delight from start to finish, making it the best way to experience this legendary Tactical RPG to date. From its excellent voice acting to much-needed quality-of-life updates, newcomers and veterans alike are in for a treat.
But, like the original entry, you will need to fight through its relatively steep learning curve and interact with its systems and mechanics if you hope to get through it. It doesn’t pull its punches, and the Golgollada Gallows mission is a perfect example of that, having you square off against Gaffgarion and his team of Knights and Time Mages, which can be very tough to overcome!
Golgollada Gallows Overview
Golgollada Gallows is the 19th primary story mission in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, having Ramza fall into Gaffgarion’s trap, forcing him to defeat not only Gaffgarion but also his many Knights, Archers, and Time Mages to get out alive and save Princess Ovelia. This mission is also the first one without a Guest Character fighting alongside you.
As such, you will be in charge of every unit and must make the most out of them to succeed. They have the ability to Immobilize your units, snipe you from far ranges, and deal tremendously high amounts of damage by getting up close and personal. Do not take this encounter lightly. Here are all the units you can expect from the opposing side!

If this team composition sounds daunting to you, that’s because it is, as they pretty much have all of their bases covered. Strong close options, decent long-range threats, and Mages who can grant Haste to their units while stopping yours dead in their tracks. It’s a very strong formation that won’t be easy to take down.
For this mission, we recommend being at least Level 10, with a decently high Job Level as well. Preferably around Job Level 4-5 (we learned that one the hard way). Still, with a decent strategy, you can best Gaffgarion and his party relatively quickly!
Golgollada Gallows Recommended Formation
Since this is your first mission without a Guest Character, you are responsible for every unit on the field, allowing you to choose up to four additional characters to help you overcome Gaffgarion. To counter their intense lineup, you will need some ranged pressure of your own, as well as Mages who can keep everyone afloat while dishing out damage, buffs, or ailments.
Ramza should be a Knight for this encounter, as having the best armor available will go a very long way, and you will also be able to deal a lot of damage when getting up close and personal with the enemy. Other than that, we recommend bringing along a Time Mage/Black Mage hybrid, an Archer, a Mystic/White Mage hybrid, and Agrias for a well-rounded team of your own!

As you will come to see in the guide below, our Ramza was a Level 1 Monk for our encounter, and that was a mistake to say the least. We strongly recommend making him a Knight, equipping him with the best armor, weapon, and shield you can, as it will make the process much smoother for you. If your Monk is higher leveled and you have access to its more potent abilities, you should be fine to roll with it!
How To Complete Golgollada Gallows
Being that you must eliminate every enemy unit to succeed in this mission, your unit placement and formation will be quite crucial, as you will need to take Gaffgarion down as early as possible to prevent him from dealing tons of damage and replenishing his health. He’s by far your most annoying opponent aside from the Time Mages.
With Group 1, leave Ramza in his initial position and place your Time Mage/Black Mage directly behind him. Then, to the right of the Mage, place your Archer. While you can use Mustadio, he can’t arch shots like an Archer can, which can be a hindrance depending on where you place your other units when attacking.
Group 2 will consist of Agrias and your Mystic/White Mage hybrid unit. For these two, place them on the far back tiles, with Agrias being on the right-most tile and your Mage being on the left. This will allow them to reach specific spots when it’s their turn, which can give them a huge advantage early on!
Opening Moves
Opening up the encounter will be Gaffgarion, who will move to the platform to the right of Group 1 before executing his Shadowblade attack on your Time Mage for considerable damage. While the damage to your Mage isn’t ideal, the positioning of Gaffgarion is, allowing us to capitalize on him being out of place shortly.
From here, one of the Archers will move toward the ramp of the gallows and will shoot at Ramza, dealing a decent amount of damage. If you’re a Knight, you will receive far less damage, which could be lifesaving in the later rounds. Overall, this is a fair trade, as she’s also in an odd position that is beneficial to you in later rounds.
Ramza follows, allowing him to walk down to Gaffgarion and land an attack of his own on him. While you can go to the side of him for a higher success rate of hitting him, that will leave your back exposed to the other enemies, so we strongly suggest avoiding that risk. Land a standard attack on him or use Pummel/Aurablast if your Monk is leveled enough. If you went with Knight, a standard attack will be more than enough here.
If you went with an Archer over Mustadio, you can actually hit Gaffgarion by arching an arrow over your Time Mage and Ramza’s head. If not, then you must place Ramza to the side of Gaffgarion and will need to move Mustadio into position to get a clear shot at his target. Nonetheless, if you have an Archer, remain in position and opt to do an Aim +7 shot on Gaffgarion for mass damage.
The enemy Knight is up next, who will run up from the bottom of the Gallows and strike Ramza with a devastating attack, dealing well more than half his health if you’re a Mage. This is one of the many reasons we recommend choosing Knight for this mission, as the extra defense and health are tremendously beneficial in situations like this.
Two Knights are up next, one will go into the corner of the ramp leading up to the gallows before Waiting, while the other will be on the high wall above where you placed Group 2. This Knight will move onto an elevated portion of the wall and Wait in front of the Time Mage, since they cannot attack or get into a super advantage position this turn.
Adelaide, the second Archer on the enemy side, is up next and will move to the top of the gallows before aiming and firing a shot at Agrias. It has a 58 percent chance of landing, so you may very well get lucky enough to evade taking damage altogether. Nonetheless, it’s not super high-damaging, so it’s nothing to worry about.
It’s now time for the Time Mages, having their first Time Mage cast Haste on themselves and the Knight atop the high wall, which won’t come into play until five turns later. It has an 80 percent chance of landing, so you can expect them to have increased Speed after it has been cast.
The second Time Mage will cast Slow onto Concessa from the top of the high wall all the way down through the floor, having the AoE hit Agrias as well. Thankfully, it won’t come out until five turns later, allowing Agrias to get out of the way. Unfortunately, it has a 62 percent success rate, so the odds are against you on this one.
Now it’s your Time Mage’s turn, except they will be dipping into their pool of Black Mage capabilities. Since your Archer’s Aim +7 is still being charged, you can begin casting Fira and place it on the tile beside Gaffgarion, allowing it to hit him and the Knight. This action, along with the Archer’s, will defeat Gaffgarion before his second turn, which is massive.
Your Mystic follows after your Time Mage, allowing you to move to the corner of the wall and cast Hesitation on the Knight and Time Knight on the high wall above you. It has a 66 percent chance of landing and, if it does, will take them out of the match for several turns, allowing you to ignore them for a prolonged period.
Closing out the first rotation will be your trusty Holy Knight, Agrias, who can now move onto the gallows. Once here, target the Archer near its base and unleash her Hallowed Bolt for massive damage, taking out half her health in one fell swoop!
Second Rotation
Starting the second rotation will be the Knight and Time Mage duo atop the high wall. If your Mystic’s Hesitation hits them, they will both run into the back right corner of the high wall and Wait, as they cannot do anything. If not, the Knight will likely begin moving down the scaffolding toward Ramza, while the Time Mage will cast Slow or Immobilize on one of your units.
Following them is their Archer, who will single out the highly injured Ramza, delivering a shot that KOs them. Again, this is why we stressed being a Knight for this encounter, as it would allow Ramza not only to take much more damage but also give him the opportunity to parry or evade incoming attacks. Nonetheless, if this happens to you, don’t panic; we can get our boy up!
Now it’s your Archer’s turn, allowing him to stay in position and charge an Aim +5 shot on the Knight standing beside Ramza. It will take three turns after this one ends, meaning it will hit its target and nearly KO them to boot. After this, a Knight will move up to the center of the gallows and Wait, ending their turn without doing anything of note.
After that, your Time Mage will take the stage, allowing you to cast Blizzara on the Archer that KO’d Ramza. This will do an immense amount of damage to her, allowing you to clean up her and the Knight very soon, which will go a long way. After this, your Archer will hit the Knight with his charged attack, causing the Knight to move a few blocks over and Wait.
Next, it’s time for their other Time Mage to go on the prowl, targeting Agrias with her Immobilize Spell. This has an 81 percent chance of hitting, so you can assume it will, unless you have equipment that directly cancels it out (e.g., Rubber Boots, Guardian Bracelet). If it does, Agrias will be unable to move from wherever she moves next turn for 24 ticks.
With the looming Immobilize on Agrias, move her toward the Archer standing off to the side of the gallows and stand directly at her side. Once here, use Hallowed Bolt to KO her, while also being away from the other enemies in case Immobilize hits you. And that’s it for this rotation!
Third Rotation
Since the Knight and Time Mage will still be under the effects of Hesitation if it landed, the third rotation will also begin with them electing to Wait atop the high wall since they cannot do much of anything else. However, the effects will wear off during this phase, allowing them to move toward the end of it, so keep that in mind.
Following this, the Archer will move up beside the Knight and attempt to use her Aim +1 on your Time Mage to KO them. The problem is, for her, this won’t come out until four turns later, allowing you to quickly take her down before she can fire her shot.
Fortunately, immediately after her turn in your Archer’s turn, and since she’s already severely wounded, you can land a basic attack on her to KO her instantly, saving your Time Mage from falling in battle, which would be disastrous in this situation. If a standard shot won’t kill for you, you should be able to sneak an Aim +1 in.
Next, their Knight will run up behind your Mystic and land a massive hit on her back. While this won’t KO her, she will be in a pretty rough situation. Fortunately, her turn is next, so you can recover pretty effortlessly.
You won’t be able to make it to Ramza here if he’s down for you, so move as far forward as you can and cast Cura on yourself, allowing you to replenish the entirety of your Mystic’s HP. Again, Ramza may or may not be downed for you, depending on the Job you selected, but he will be fine either way. Just ensure you heal yourself to avoid disaster.
After this, the Knight you inflicted with Hesitation will recover and will begin running down the scaffolding before Waiting at the top of the walkway down. Then, the Knight that’s hanging on by a mere thread will start making their way up the scaffolding before Waiting at the base of the high wall.
Your Time Mage is up next. Have them stand in the AoE of your Mystic’s Cura, then cast Blizzara on the Knight at the top of the scaffolding. Ensure you’re in the AoE as well, as if you cast it directly on her, you must be directly beside her for it to hit. We may have misremembered where we placed it, which does have its consequences. Sadly.
Now, the scary part, as the Time Mage will recover on the high wall and will attempt to cast Immobilize on your Time Mage. However, its success rate is pretty low, and she will almost always evade it via Cloak Evasion. If it hits, it’s likely game over if Ramza has fallen, since you won’t be able to reach him in time to revive him.
From here, their other Time Mage will run on top of the gallows and cast Slow on your Time Mage and Mystic, which won’t do too much if it lands, as your Mystic will still be fast enough to make it to Ramza before he dies. Next up will be Agrias, who likely got hit by Immobilize, forcing you to either Wait or use Evasive Stance to end the turn. If she didn’t, you can run up behind the Time Mage and use Hallowed Bolt to KO them before it goes off!
Fourth Rotation
With your ever-so reliable Archer kicking off this round of combat, you can land a basic attack on the Knight trying to make their way up the scaffolding to KO them, but do note that you only have a 75 percent chance of hitting them. They can very likely evade or parry the incoming attack. If that happens, you will get them on the rotation.
If the Knight dodges your Archer’s attack, they will retreat further up the scaffolding before Waiting. The injured Knight, already on the high wall, will also move a little bit over before Waiting as well, doing nothing of note with their turn. One of them will receive a Hi-Potion from the Time Mage, but that’s fine, as they won’t be too challenging to deal with.
Next up is the other Knight that’s been hanging around the gallows. He will still be pursuing your Mystic and will deliver another powerful attack on her back. Since you healed up earlier, it’s nothing too major to worry about, as your top priority will be to get Ramza back on his feet before he permanently dies and you fail the mission.
Finally, you can pick up Ramza with your Mystic/White Mage hybrid. While you will have only a 59 percent chance, it’s pretty reliable, so here’s hoping luck is on your side. Again, if you made Ramza a Knight, unlike us, you probably won’t even be in this situation. Nonetheless, picking him up pretty much solidifies your victory from here on out.
Okay, you know how we mentioned we sort of thought we cast Cura on a different tile, therefore our Time Mage didn’t get healed, and it would definitely come back to bite us? Well, now’s the time for that. If your Time Mage is healed up, skip this part; you’re good. If not, sit back and watch the opposing Time Mage club you over the head for a swift KO. How embarrassing.
If Agrias was inflicted with Immobility, she should be ready to go now, allowing you to run up behind the Time Mage on the gallows and execute her Hallowed Bolt for an instant KO. If Immobility wasn’t effective on Agrias, you likely already KO’d this Time Mage last rotation. In that case, attack the Knight standing behind the gallows for pretty substantial damage!
Almost There!
We’re nearing the final rotation now, but before then, it’s time to Raise your Time Mage if they fell last round. Fortunately, our Ramza is also a pocket White Mage, so we just used him to do it. If your Time Mage is still healthy, you can’t do too much here with Ramza; just move him a bit forward, but out of the range of the enemy for the time being.
Following that, it’s time for your Archer to shine again. Have them focus their sights on the Knight beside the gallows with a devastating Aim +5, allowing you to deal a substantial amount of damage to them. While you do only have a 60 percent chance of hitting them, on the off-chance you nail them, you will be set up beautifully. After this, the Knight at the top of the wall will reposition and Wait, having your Raise and Aim +3 go off shortly after.
After all your charged actions go off, it will be the Knight’s turn by the gallows, who will go after your Time Mage. They will land a devastating normal attack, nearly delivering a swift KO. Fortunately, they will still be standing, allowing us to begin closing things out.
Your Mystic is up next. Use her to cast Cura on Ramza and the Time Mage, bringing their health back to full as if nothing happened. You can breathe a big sigh of relief. However, after you do this, the opposing side’s Time Mage will use a Hi-Potion on the Knight on the high wall, giving them lots of HP back. But that won’t matter too much now.
Closing out this round will, of course, be Agrias, allowing her to use her potent Hallowed Bolt on the Knight standing beside the gallows. While this won’t push him past half health or anything, it sets the rest of your team up nicely to KO them on their next turns. Onto the final rotation!
The Final Rotation
After a Knight makes their way down the scaffolding and Waits, it will be Ramza’s turn once more. Use him to attack the Knight by the gallows for massive damage. If you’re a Knight, there’s a good chance you KO them here. If you’re a Monk and are decently leveled, a lucky Pummel or an Aurablast can also do them in.
If the Knight isn’t dead, you can use your Archer to deliver the finishing blow with a standard attack. While you only have a 60 percent chance, the odds are still in your favor. If they’re already taken care of, turn your attention to the Knight on the scaffolding and hit them with an Aim +3 to deal critical damage.
With the Knight by the gallows finally gone, a Knight will move onto the scaffolding, having all three of the remaining enemies grouped in one spot. Using your Time Mage, cast Thundara on the center Knight, allowing you to hit all three of them with a devastating attack. This will instantly KO their Time Mage and leave both Knights severely injured.
From there, the front-most Knight will make their way down the scaffolding and will attack your Mystic, dealing tremendous amounts of damage to her. Luckily, since the other Knight is on their last legs, they will retreat back to the top of the high wall. Despite your Mystic being near-death, you are guaranteed to win now.
Ramza is up next, allowing you to position him to the side of the Knight and deliver a devastating blow to him. Again, if you’re a Knight or have Pummel/Aura Blast for your Monk, you can very much KO them here with a lucky strike. Nonetheless, attack this Knight and end your turn.
If the Knight is still alive, position your Archer on the high point of the wall on the right and use a standard attack to deliver a KO. You will have a 100 percent chance of hitting them, so it’s a guaranteed strike, leaving only one Knight left. If the Knight is out, you can’t do too much here, so pick up a Diamond or nearby Treasure Chest if you can.
Lastly, to save the day, we have Agrias. Place her at the bottom of the high wall and use her Hallowed Bolt to hit the severely injured Knight on the top of it. Place it on the tile in front of him to have the AoE reach him, allowing you to KO him instantly, completing the mission!
Rewards
Completing the Golgollada Gallows mission in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will net you 12,200 Gil and nothing else. Keep in mind that you will get a boatload of EXP and JP from this mission, so there’s more than what meets the eye here.
Hopefully, we also highlighted the mistakes we’ve made on this mission to steer you in the better, more optimal path, as our Ramza’s Monk was not leveled, and we think he would have been better off as a Knight for this particular mission. Nonetheless, we were able to clear it despite our flaws, which showcases how adaptable your team and gameplay can be!
