Helldivers 2 could introduce a roguelite mode that completely changes the game

Helldivers 2 is a simple game. Head down to the planet with three friends or a rando to eliminate everything that isn't human, complete a few objectives and extract them. It's popular because it's a complete gameplay loop. Some fans have requested different modes, such as solo or duo, but developer Arrowhead has stuck firmly to the formula. But it looks like this may change.

In a recent tweet, creative director Johan Pilestedt revealed that the studio is currently prototyping a new roguelite mode for Helldivers 2 (thanks to GamesRadar+) that will completely change the structure of the game. Of course, just because it's in a prototype doesn't mean it'll actually be released, but it sounds pretty interesting.

When asked by a fan who suggested the concept of a roguelike mode, Pilestedt casually said, “Hey! I have a prototype of a roguelike mode. It fundamentally changes the game!” This is one way to let fans know that possible new modes are in development. Unfortunately he didn't provide any more details, but that won't stop me from conceptualizing.

I imagine this roguelite mode will be a solo experience using randomly selected weapons and stratagems. Like the base game, there are primary and secondary missions, the latter of which will help you unlock more of the Helldivers' arsenal. Of course, I'm not a developer, so my version sounds very similar to the regular game and not “radically” different, as Pilestedt said.

Helldiver battles the cockroach, a giant insect dragon that spews fire and bile in the dark.

Seriously, who thought of this?

Perhaps they'll flip everything on its head and have you play as a commander who deploys Helldivers and strategies in various locations, like Dispatch.

Only time will tell what this roguelite mode will entail, and that's only if Arrowhead actually decides to introduce it to the game. Recently, developers have been working on fixing performance issues that arise with each update. But surprisingly, the team released an optimization update that shrinks the game from 154GB to 23GB.
