Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has to be one of the most messed up series of all time. Considered one of the best games of all time, we only got one sequel and an MMO to fill in the gaps, and if you want to play it now, you don't need a fancy remaster or remake.
So one fan took matters into his own hands and set out to create a VR port in Unity. Reddit user BearableBastard shared the results so far, showing off some of KOTOR's opening missions and how this VR remake handles the in-game combat and various weapons.
This KOTOR fan has made the prologue playable in VR.
“I posted a video of Taris last year, but there wasn’t much to it other than blocking projectiles with a lightsaber. [lot] A lot of progress has been made over the past few months. “The biggest obstacle right now is getting the animations and NPCs to play correctly without deforming them,” explains the creator.
As you can see here, a lot of progress has actually been made. We see players testing out a variety of weapons that had to be adapted to work in VR outside of KOTOR's usual combat mechanics. It looks great right now and even works when facing off against NPCs in combat.
Society has outgrown the need for a KOTOR remake.
What we need is a spiritual successor.
The level of work that went into this really cannot be overstated. Even speaking as a layman, you will notice that the lightsaber performs very differently in this build. Because we can actually swing a lightsaber around us. In KOTOR, we press buttons to perform specific attacks and use different weapons that we have in our hands. Even better, players can be seen swinging their lightsabers and deflecting blaster bullets. It's something our characters did automatically in KOTOR, but now it's up to our own skill and timing.
Another cool feature is that it looks like it could destroy the environment around us. We get a glimpse of this when the player takes out his lightsaber and uses it to destroy the box. If the developers stick with that feature, this is another new addition to the original game.
Coercion is also present here. It's hard to see how it's activated, but you can see it being selected from the menu and deployed into battle. It actually looks really cool to be able to shoot lightning from your hand or forcefully push someone away with a flick of your wrist.
In the meantime, the KOTOR remake continued to fall out of favor, but it got an official spiritual sequel in Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
