Fallout Showrunner has confirmed that the main trio will split again in Season 3.

Fallout has always been billed as a series with three main characters: Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul. But for two seasons now, we've been waiting for them to actually get some proper screen time together.

Now it looks like we'll be waiting even longer. Fallout showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet confirmed that in Season 3, Lucy and Max will begin their own stories instead of joining The Ghoul on their journey to Colorado.

In Season 3 of Fallout, the Ghoul leaves Max and Lucy behind.

Lucy and The Ghoul from Fallout are shown walking through the Mojave.

Speaking with Collider, Robertson-Dworet explained how the trio's paths will diverge this time around.

“[The Ghoul] 'Cause he doesn't know where he's going in Colorado [he’s] Robertson-Dworet said: “It’s hinting at where exactly we’re headed next season, but I’m not trying to give a definitive answer yet.”

But one thing she can confirm is that we won't see Lucy and Max join The Ghoul. “You're right that Lucy and Max aren't heading to Colorado. Where will they go next? I hope that's the question people are asking themselves.”

So, if The Ghoul is going to be exploring Colorado throughout Season 3, and Lucy and Max aren't, that means we're switching the dynamic once again. While Season 1 was a mix of Lucy/Max and Lucy/Ghoul, Season 2 was mostly Lucy/Ghoul, with a bit of Max/Ghoul at the end.

This is likely to disappoint fans, as they have been waiting for this trio to actually be a trio for a long time. But to be fair, there are a lot of storylines to deal with right now, including the resurrected Legion, the NCR, the Vault-Tec, the Vault Dwellers, the Brotherhood, and a few more you've probably forgotten. So it makes sense to split the work up a bit until some of it is wrapped up or included in other plot threads.

Right now, it looks like Lucy and Max will be in the middle of the warring Mojave, but it's also likely they'll connect with Norm and Claudia after their turmoil with the other Vault residents. Meanwhile, the rest of the Vault-Tec plot centers around The Ghoul's family, but he too appears to be involved in something involving the Enclave. The Brotherhood could fit into one of those stories, so we'll have to see how it plays out.
