Ellie made a “6-7” joke in The Last of Us Part 2. It's not a joke.

the last of us part 2 It's known for being a brutal and emotionally intense story, but looking back at some of Ellie's more light-hearted dialogue, I was shocked to see that she appeared to make a “6-7” joke in a flashback scene. Since “6-7” was one of the biggest memes of the year, I never expected to hear anything matching this joke. the last of us part 2But here it is.

For those who don't know, “6-7” was one of the most popular Gen Alpha memes of 2025. If you are looking for definitive definitions of slang terms, you will unfortunately be disappointed. Essentially, “6-7” doesn't have one specific meaning, but is basically used as an inside joke. When the numbers “6” and “7” appear side by side in any situation, it's not strange to hear nearby teens going wild. If you know, you'll know, but if you don't, it's more confusing than anything else. the last of us part 2's Ellie may be much more serious in the sequel, but in flashbacks she is still a fairly happy child who loves to crack jokes. One of them sounds like a nod to “6-7.” Of course since then the last of us part 2 It's obviously not a direct reference to the meme, seeing as it came out five years ago, but the coincidence is striking, especially in the context of the scene.

“6-7” may ultimately have originated from the Skrilla song “Doot Doot (6 7)”.

The Last of Us Part 2 has its own unique “6-7” joke.

Over the years there have been cases like this: the simpsons It appears to have predicted future events, and it continues to fuel internet conspiracy theories. but, the last of us part 2 It seems like the least likely medium to have a moment where it feels like it's predicting future meme culture. The “6-7” reference occurs in a flashback scene where Ellie and Joel explore an abandoned science museum. Check it out for yourself starting at minute 4 of the video.

As Ellie approaches the moon sculpture, she jokes with Joel about how many times humans have visited the statue.

Ellie: “Do you know how many times we’ve been to the moon?”

Joel: “Uh, twice?”

Ellie: “Number 6.”

Joel: “Are you sure?”

Ellie: “That’s right. We’ll do it until 7 o’clock.”

This is one of the most meaningful parts of the game, but now looking back, there's an added touch that really feels like Ellie's personality. Because you probably liked the “6-7” meme. In a flashback, Ellie is the exact age of someone caught up in the “6-7” hype. So it's pretty funny to imagine that the “6-7” meme is somehow still thriving, even in a post-apocalyptic fictional world. Even when Ellie says, “I'm going to make it number 7,” she takes on an almost playful tone that makes it sound like she's fully aware that she's joking. Ellie's Joke the last of us It's an integral part of her character, as the game shows how she sometimes uses humor to cope with her less-than-ideal lifestyle, but it's now absurd to think that “6-7” could unintentionally be part of that coping mechanism.

Ellie's “6-7” joke may not have been planned, but it's a great coincidence

Unless Naughty Dog had some sort of secret access to time travel technology that no one knew about, the studio and director Neil Druckmann had no way of knowing that Ellie's dialogue could end up becoming a meme reference. Honestly, that's funnier. It's such an absurd inside joke that a lot of it has to get right for Ellie to look like she's using Gen Alpha slang.

To some, “6-7” is just another form of brain rot, but to others it is a term that connects an entire generation. It's stupid, but that's the point. Since Ellie's age matches the generation that originated the term, this part the last of us part 2's museum level turned into a strange meta moment.
