Another great sidekick character, Mintara represents the classic media trope of the minor villain turned uneasy ally. There's something completely satisfying about having previously hostile characters join you on your quest. Because your interests align and you are both hungry for revenge.

Because the Netherbrain forces him back into the shadows of vampire life. For morally questionable play, he could be a solid protagonist, but Netherbrain isn't his top priority.
Kalach
With the exception of Gortash, it has only a loose connection to the main story.
A character with a stronger tie to the main plot is Karlach. Her backstory mostly revolves around Gortash, one of the main leaders of the Absolute Cult. In that sense, she has a personal stake.
She also has a whole side plot with Wyll at the start of the game, bringing an interesting dynamic to the camp, but it's hard to imagine her as a main character considering that most of her story involves the events taking place in Avernus and the players there, as well as her malfunctioning heart engine. Karlach best plays the role of a secondary character we come to deeply love and care for, a person we sincerely want to save as he battles absolute adoration.
Shadow Heart

One of the key items in the game is a mysterious artifact that Shadowheart is tasked with retrieving from her Mother Superior. Their purpose as a member of the Sharan Cult is to use this device to their advantage and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, like the Githyanki or the Absolute Cult.

Gale isn't given an immediate connection to what's going on in his past, but he makes up for it through his quest towards the end of Act 1 as the player exits the Underdark. It's easy to see him as a hero returning home to save his father and the city he loves, and finally being forgiven by the Ravenguard for their pact with Myzora. All in all, it's the perfect setup for the story and brings more complexity to his character that isn't suited to playing a sidekick.
Laezel
Baldur's Gate 3 is her story from beginning to end.
Lae'zel's story is a hero's quest like no other. One of Vlaakith's most devout servants, she is indoctrinated into the ways of the Githyanki and sets out on a journey to prove her worth as a warrior for her queen, seeking the head of a mind flayer. When she eventually becomes a tadpole, she has the greatest motivation of all the characters: to heal herself and find the artifact the Githyanki are hunting.
There are also several major story twists and turns along the way that greatly impact her unwavering belief in Vlaakith's superiority. Needless to say, the Githyanki play a huge role in the final act of the story as the two factions begin to tear each other apart and fight for dominance. It was an adventure for her to discover not only the truth about her tribe, but also the truth about herself. Her strong-willed nature makes her easily the best choice for the protagonist role.
