It is unknown how Joyboy ate the Devil Fruit, but it is already clear from the story that he actually utilized the powers of this Devil Fruit and that he was the former Nika.
With his power he faced twenty kings of the world, and this battle raged for many years. In the end, Joyboy was defeated in battle and died, but his will is now only inherited by Luffy. Fans will get a proper look at Joy Boy using Gear 5 when his flashback begins. This has to be at some point in the final story.
