A new God Of War won't be released anytime soon, leaker claims

PlayStation is going all in on God of War, including a TV show, a Metroidvania spinoff, and a Grease trilogy remake. But what about the rumored Egyptian sequel?

As Ragnarok approaches its fifth anniversary in 2027, many are waiting with bated breath for Sony Santa Monica to reveal the next chapter of the Kratos and Atreus story, but reputable leaker Ashhong isn't convinced.

“It’s the perfect time to release the next mainline item,” said Resetera user SuperBoss.

Ashhong replied, “Don’t hold your breath.”

What is Sony Santa Monica doing?

It's unclear whether this means Sony Santa Monica is working on a completely different IP, a God of War spinoff, or simply that the mainline entry isn't ready yet. Reliable insider source shinobi602 said earlier this month that a separate IP for God of War appears to be the most likely of these options, as the studio expects to reveal its next game later this year.

“Given the quarters they are targeting, I [it might be announced this year]. “Maybe State of Play in May or Summer Keighleys (SGF),” they speculated. “At the moment we don't know yet. “If not by then, they will either push the release further or do a shorter reveal for the release.”

However, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier claimed last year that Sony Santa Monica's next project “isn't a new IP,” and many took this as confirmation of a new God of War. The studio soon began hiring candidates who were “proficient with the combat design choices, systems, mechanics, and enemies of God of War (2018),” and these rumors grew louder.

While certainly attractive, “not a new IP” could mean a licensed game, and it's also plausible that Sony Santa Monica has multiple projects in the pipeline, or that they're repeating God of War (2018) in their next project, whether it's a Ragnarök sequel or not. Hopefully, we'll find out soon. In the meantime, we'll be digging into Sons of Sparta, and there's also a live-action Prime Video series to look forward to.
