A twist can make or break a movie in a detective movie, like finding out who the culprit is or revealing something that changes the overall perspective. After two or three hours, viewers are either hooked, shocked or overwhelmed by these stories, but either way, they become uninterested in them. This is what makes video games different as a medium, and why twists can have greater impact in that medium.

This change in gaming in the 2010s was unexpected, a bit disconcerting, and downright weird.
More active elements, from shooting guns to choosing dialogue, give players a say in how the story progresses. This will probably add to the guilt a bad decision may have in relation to the distortions. Now, let's take a look at some of the biggest video game transformations in history and see how they impact players. This is just a brief summary because these stories are all complex, but I will summarize them in a bearable way.
There will also be spoilers.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
to the distant future
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is set to be a time travel game that mainly centers around a group of teenagers trying to win through various eras. Throughout these different time periods, players will come to know and love these characters through the writing and voice acting that brings them to life.
Although there are tactical RPG elements, this game is more of an adventure game than anything else, and the time travel elements are a ruse, making it a game with a bleak future. In reality, these characters all exist in a simulation aboard a space station, period, they are just different parts of the spaceship.
bioshock
please.
bioshock Everything seems to be a coincidence when the main character, Jack, falls into the ocean in a plane crash. He swims to a lighthouse in the ocean and discovers that there is an elevator that takes him down to Rapture, a lost utopia under the sea. Rapture is now plagued by its mutated citizens.
The entire time, Jack appears to be there as a survivor, but is actually controlled by the phrase “Would You Kindly?”, which causes Jack to take a plane and swim to Rapture in the hopes of gaining access to a realm that only founder Andrew Ryan can access. Jack was also sent there to kill his father, Ryan, for a man named Fontaine who wanted to take over Rapture.
braid
upside down man
braid One of the first massive indie hits of the first HD generation that launched with the Xbox 360. As suit-wearing hero Tim, players must navigate challenging 2D levels while solving puzzles using time-manipulating powers to rescue the princess.
The twist becomes clear in the final level, where the twist flows. The team is not trying to rescue the princess because they are villains trying to hide her from the real heroes, and this becomes clear in the final reversal. For such a simple platformer, this was quite surprising.
Claire Obsker: Expedition 33
What have we been fighting for?
Claire Obsker: Expedition 33 The plot takes a twist, starting with protagonist Gustave, who dies after about 10 hours of game time. To rewind a bit, the entire goal of the game is to kill a giant wizard named The Painttress who kills an entire age group every year. All seemed great until the last remnants of Expedition 33 arrived at The Painttress, defeated her, and the world began to fade away.
The 10 Darkest Endings in Science Fiction Video Game History
The word “dark” doesn't even begin to describe the sci-fi game's grim ending.
What players around the world were fighting for was fake, as one of the party members, Maelle, returns to the real city of Paris. Things don't end here, but this is definitely the biggest twist of the game, and the rest of the adventure finds Maelle trying to fix this erasure mishap.
final fantasy 7
Two enhanced heroes
final fantasy 7 It centers on Cloud, who was an elite warrior in Shinra's SOLDIER program. He claims to have left because he disagrees with their methods, and as the plot unravels, including the introduction of the big villain Sephiroth, Cloud appears to have amnesia.
Essentially, one of the party members, Tifa, enters Cloud's consciousness in the latter part of the game in order to understand his true memories. Cloud's SOLDIER memories are Zack's, but his friend Cloud wasn't outright lying about taking down Sephiroth and saving Tifa all those years ago. He's there like a lowly security guard, and this only scratches the surface of how messed up Cloud's life is.
the last of us
there is no other choice
Players can probably predict that the following grim game will occur: the last of us It wouldn't have been a happy ending. The plot centers on Joel, a character with an odd job, who takes a young girl, Ellie, across zombie-infested America from Boston to Seattle. In Seattle, doctors were scheduled to operate on Ellie and extract something from her body to find a cure for the plague.
The problem is that doctors believe they can do this. However, after Joel and the players arrive in Seattle, they learn that Ellie must die. The player must then rescue Ellie by gunning down the entire hospital, which in return may turn them into villains or perhaps father of the year. Joel's decisions in the game are controversial.
messenger
Graphics level up
messenger It was a nice indie throwback to the pinnacle of ninja gaming on the NES. Ninja Gaiden and Ninja's Shadow. It's a challenging action platformer, but it's never boring thanks to expressive pixels, tight controls, and amazing music. In the final battle, the player is thrown into an area where they are warped into the future, which causes the graphics quality to change slightly along with the music.
It's really exciting to see the game continue with new gameplay and art style, and I think we rarely see these kinds of leaps made in movies. space Jam: A New Legacy, Going back and forth between reality and 2D animated segments is probably messenger.
Raiden Meme
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty They pulled a bait and switch and advertised it heavily as just another game starring Solid Snake, which was both true and false. The first section, which takes place on a boat, actually features some of the franchise's main heroes, but Snake's presence is brief. In the main section of the game, players take on the role of Raiden, a rookie who is overconfident about his skills.
10 RPG stories that start out simple but completely flip the script
This RPG has unexpected twists and layers that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Because he went through the VR mission, he thinks he's as good as Snake. This is a kind of meta-commentary on players who play video games thinking they have military experience. Beyond that, the mission itself turned out to be kind of a sham, as the commander attempted to manipulate Raiden into becoming the next best soldier on top of other shenanigans that were too confusing to wrap up once, including the President being behind it all.
red dead redemption
Don't worry, father.
red dead redemption It's a western starring John, a former gang member. John is recruited by the law to track down and take down his remaining former colleagues. Most games are linear as far as westerns and Rockstar games are concerned, which isn't a bad thing.
However, at the climax, when everything is going smoothly, John is betrayed by the law and executed by firing squad. The game doesn't end there. Time skips to John's son Jack, who is now in control, and the player can seek revenge on John, which is quite cathartic.
Silent Hill 2 (2024)
remorse
text Silent Hill 2 is an excellent horror game, but the 2024 remake provides additional context to the narrative. The game finds James, a seemingly ordinary man, returning to Silent Hill to find his wife Mary. Mary thinks she's dead, but somehow she receives a letter. Along the way, he meets other characters who are just as confused as he is, but nothing seems to make sense.
There are various endings to how this revelation plays out, but players learn that James' guilt over killing his wife brought him to Silent Hill. In some endings it is through neglect, in others it is through coercion. Either way, he's stuck in Silent Hill in a time loop until James forgives him.
