Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is finally easily playable on PC, thanks to a fan-made reconstruction that's the closest thing we've got to a port.
Castlevania has been dormant for a long time and is about to release its first new game in over a decade, but Konami has at least kept the series' past alive with a collection of remasters. As long as it's not Lords of Shadows, these collections make it very easy to play any Castlevania game.
However, there is a slightly strange exception to this rule. In particular, Castlevania Requiem, which includes Symphony of the Night, the best game in the series, is completely locked to PlayStation. This has left PC players unable to experience Alucard's journey for some time, and thanks to a fan project, that's finally changing.
Symphony Of The Night is finally available on PC with this port.
God Bless Nocturne Recomp
The project in question is NocturneRecomp. This project repackages the Xbox Live Arcade version of Symphony of the Night so that it can be played on both Windows and Linux. This project actually launched a few weeks ago, but it was brought to my attention by Castlevania YouTuber Dr4gonBlitzDaily who actually showed it off.
I'm not sure how the Xbox Live Arcade version of SOTN compares to other ports, but NocturneRecomp looks like a very solid way to play the game, with modding and widescreen support included. The project's developers have also suggested that more features will be added, including quality-of-life items and Randomiser compatibility.
I just finished my first playthrough of SOTN, and NoctureRecomp makes me very tempted to play it again…
Even if the reviews aren't incredibly impressive, it's a bit of a godsend as it's one of the only good ways for PC users to play Symphony of the Night. If you're looking to revisit the series before it returns with Belmont's Curse later this year, I think NoctureRecomp might be worth checking out.
